markwolfe Veteran Posted March 7, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 7, 2004 help i dont know wot os to use lindows or mandrake. wot do u think? which is better, etcthanks welshkid If you don't really want to learn about Linux, and just use it, Lindows isn't too bad.... However, I would recommend Mandrake if you are even a *little* bit interested in working with the OS, and tweaking and adjusting, and maybe even learning about Linux. Mandrake is an easy distro to install and to manage.
kongit
I think you should choose mandrake over lindows because mandrake is an actual linux distro while lindows is in its own category. Mandrake is also very easy to install. Lindows isn't bad, but I consider mandrake to be much better.

Barney T. Administrators Posted March 7, 2004 Administrators Share Posted March 7, 2004 Download free at: http://www.linuxiso.org You can read about how to make an ISO disk. The download is FREE. You need 3 disks for the full install plus all apps. Barney
markwolfe Veteran Posted March 7, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 7, 2004 Mandrake is a 3-CD set (last I checked). Look to http://linuxiso.org/ for a good source for all your Linux iso download needs. ;) [EDIT: :pinch: Too slow at typing]
john smith 1924 Veteran Posted March 7, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 7, 2004 I installed redhat 9 a while back and its pretty simple to use + run + install. I am waiting for mandrake community (10) to come out tho -it looks really good.

Elmo
went to http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=29 which do i use i586 or ppc ?? and all 3 cd's right? welshkid
markwolfe Veteran Posted March 7, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 7, 2004 Use i586. It is the normal "pc" archetecture.
markwolfe Veteran Posted March 7, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 7, 2004 A bit of explanation... Linux runs on MANY platforms (processor types). It runs on Intel/AMD/Cyrix type of processors, '386 and better (note that the i368 means this type of CPU, including Pentium and compatible families) (also note that your Mandrake says i586 because Mandrake dropped support for older CPUs) So, i386 means the standard 'PC' types that are common. PPC is PowerPC family found in Macs SPRMS is Sparc There is Risc and many others, too! Linux is a truly omnipresent kernel, able to run on almost anything! Windows is stuck in the i386 series. From kernel.org: Linux was first developed for 32-bit x86-based PCs (386 or higher). These days it also runs on (at least) the Compaq Alpha AXP, Sun SPARC and UltraSPARC, Motorola 68000, PowerPC, PowerPC64, ARM, Hitachi SuperH, IBM S/390, MIPS, HP PA-RISC, Intel IA-64, DEC VAX, AMD x86-64 and CRIS architectures. Barney T. Administrators Posted March 7, 2004 Administrators Share Posted March 7, 2004 Yeah... what Mark said........ and yes, you need all three CDs (if you want the full download). Hope you have broadband because each download is 700 MB. Barney

markwolfe Veteran Posted March 7, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 7, 2004 Just a reminder... The .iso files are images, and make sure that your burner supports burning an .iso image. Do not burn it as a file (where you open the CD, and it shows: xxxxxxxxxxxx.iso as the only file on it). And, you might want to download a Windows program to verify the md5sum of your download, so that you are sure there is no corruption of data. Also, you don't *need* to burn them to a CD, if you have a FAT partition, you can actually direct the install to run from your hard drive! (you will need to create a boot disk to do this). I mention this in case you cannot burn .isos properly.... Mark
Elmo
hehehe i know how to burn an iso thanks anyway but i aint a complete dumb ass hehehe. thanks welshkid
markwolfe Veteran Posted March 7, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 7, 2004 It isn't always the user... Some of the 'free' burner software programs do not burn .iso files because they have been crippled to make people want to buy the "upgrade". AmpCoder
If you can wait about 5-7 days, just download Mandrake 10 instead of 9.2. I have heard a lot of good things about it and there seem to be a lot of fixes from 9.2.
markwolfe Veteran Posted March 7, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 7, 2004 Nah... Don't wait! :woot: Install what is available now, then upgrade or install the new Mandrake 10 (it has the 2.6.xx kernel!) at a later time.
