When fontconfig is first installed on Gentoo, it doesn't recognize the MS Core Fonts, which are installed by the xfree package. I recommend that you:

emerge ttf-bitsream-vera fontconfig

and restart X to get beautiful fonts.

there are several ways:

1) upgrade xfree86 to 4.4 (I wouldn't do this unless you have some idea of what you are doing)

2) install freetype, follow directions to get truetype fonts to work. (this is probably the best way for you)

3) install other font server.

with all make sure you follow the directions exactly. :)

kongit obviously has never installed Gentoo before as freetype is installed by default and xfree has NOTHING to do with font rendering.

I did remeber another thing you could try, someguy123. Play with the "bindist" use flag of freetype. When it is on, it disables the autohinter. When "bindist" is off, the autohinter from OS X is used (which makes very pretty fonts).

I haven't installed gentoo, but If I remember correctly the truetype is turned off by default in most distros (I don't know if this is the case with gentoo). you have to compile it manually to get it to work.

And xfree 4.4 comes with a very nice font server....
