Microsoft 365 Copilot is Redmond's AI assistant integrated across Microsoft 365 services, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and more. It is heavily used in enterprise and school environments, which is also why it regularly receives new features. Now, Microsoft is boasting that its AI service has cleared an external security audit once again, making it a trusted choice for various enterprise customers.

Basically, Microsoft 365 Copilot became one of the first AI systems to receive the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification in March 2025. Now, it has been recertified in March 2026 with zero non-conformities and zero improvement observations, which means that it has once again received a clean audit. It is worth noting that this certification comes from an external, independent auditor. Microsoft had already conducted an internal audit successfully prior to this.

This is a major win in terms of gaining the trust of enterprise customers as ISO 42001 certifies compliance of AI systems across governance, risk assessment, data management, transparency, human oversight, and supplier management.

Microsoft has emphasized that its 2026 certification is not about maintaining the status quo, because it also highlights how its evolving AI system meets the compliance needs of today's era. In 2025, Microsoft 365 Copilot offered a single model architecture with OpenAI's models, but it now features a multi-model architecture that also provisions Anthropic Claude models. Additionally, the AI risk assessment process has matured to become more rigorous, product quality and governance have been enhanced, and the scope of the ISO 42001 Artificial Intelligence Management Systems (AIMS) certification has expanded to also include Microsoft Copilot Studio.

The Redmond tech giant has highlighted several case studies of Microsoft 365 Copilot customers, noting that their trust has been validated. It also described an interesting approach where it is using its own AI systems to improve its AI services. This helped it achieve this ISO certification again as it can now scale the automated validation processes while humans stay in the loop. It will be interesting to see if the recertification helps Microsoft in attracting more enterprise clients; it already boasts more than 15 million paid seats for Microsoft 365 Copilot.
