I am using 4.4 and while no major differences between it and its predessor both the fonts look better and my video card works better. Additionally since it only takes 15 minutes to install I say use it until a better replacement is made. Right now there are no better replacements.

license or no license as long as i can download it im going to run it

I'm with ya there bud. If you find it's a worthwhile update, let me know how it goes on Slack. ;)

Overall, I don't know if there's much improvement on the desktop, but I think the update to kernel 2.6.3 was all that I really need in the performance arena. I'd go for XF4.4 if it's worthwhile, otherwise, I'll just hold out for FreeDesktop or Y Server or some other implementation. I still run Photoshop and Flash via WINE, so I don't much care about the license, since I run non-Free software anyway.

Its not like it takes up much of your life :)

True dat. Did you compile it or find Slack packages for it?

From what Ive been reading there is going to be a version released by x.org and freedesktop.org and it will be XFree86 4.4.0 minus the code under the license change and including their own fixes and patches. It will be the best of both worlds and thats what im waiting for. So till it is released im using the latest XFree86 of the 4.3.0 release off rawhide.

You don't compile it. xfree has it set up with packages and an install script. It took me 15 minutes to install. check it out.

i wish they would implement that dma stuff in the x server.. so the drawing of windows etc isn't coming off the memory.. you'd see a huge speed improvement then :)

Ahh. Never updated X without doing a distro install (it's just never been an issue in the past). Good to know. I'll check it out and give 'er a whirl.

Not like I think it'll matter much for me since I'm on a POS NeoMagic NM2200 vid-board, but it's always cool to have new software :ninja:

i updated to xfree86 last night using those install scripts, worked very nice. only thing i really noticed was improved nvidia/ati support and better looking AA fonts in gnome... but as always worth the upgrade
