JaredVolkl
I've got a stage 1 compile of Gentoo running on my system and I only installed KDE, I didn't plan on using Gnome at all, so I didn't install it. Once I got KDE and X all configued, I emerged FireFox and Gaim. Neither of them run. I'm thinking this is because the GTK and GTK2 libraries never got installed. So far I haven't been able to find which package I need to emerge to get these working. You'd think things like this would show up as dependancies. Anyone got any help. Would this have anything to do with me specifying -gtk -gnome in my USE flags? Any help would be appreciated. Edit: when I try to run gaim and firefox from the command line, I get "[1]+ Illegal Instruction gaim" And then it returns me to the prompt. splatnix
Been awhile since I've used Gentoo, however, I would remove the gtk flag when doing the emerge for Firebird. If you plan on using GTK-based apps, you will need to install GTK. Mind you, this shouldn't install the entirety of Gnome, but you will have a few packages that'll need doing. Danrarbc
I'd think emerge should have installed all libs and programs required by Firebird (sure you don't mean Firefox?) and GAIM, including GTK. That's kind of the whole reason it exists.

Actually yea, I meant FireFox 0.8. And you have to remember I've got -gtk -gtk2 -gnome in my use flag.
LordHatrus
My buddy has some weird little laptop, he's not running KDE or Gnome <He calls them both bloatware  hes using some other little one) , but he compiled some of the gnome libraries just for reasons like yours. I know he has gAIM working fine

JaredVolkl
Well, I was holding off on emerging firefox and gaim on my main machine until I could make sure it would work on my 2nd box. Everything went fine on my main machine though, so now I'm just wondering whats up with my 2nd box.
kemical
i think that error may have something to do with you installing gentoo on a machine it wasn't designed for... i.e. Pentium class distro on a Athon class machine
