raw_mustard
I wonder what the legal issues are around distributing windows bitmaps found in the .msstyle file. I mean, some people are just changing a few colors and then putting them up for download. surely this this is a breach of copyright? Also the uxtheme.dll file that TGSoft have got for download, wouldn't this fall under the same issue, how do they get away with it? raw_mustard
greenreaper
Good questions. Technically, it is most certainly a copyright violation. However, so far Microsoft has been very lenient, probably for the very good reason that anyone who wants to use MS bitmaps to make a skin is, in effect, making it more fun for people to use Windows. Apple is, understandably, less pleased about the situation. That's one of the reasons TGTSoft changed to an in-memory patch, though (using their own service - yowch . . .). They couldn't really go around selling Microsoft's stuff.
Dazzla Veteran Posted February 17, 2002 Veteran Share Posted February 17, 2002 The new uxtheme patcher just creates a new patched dll, the user still has to replace it, I can understand how MS would be ****ed about tgtsoft patching the actual dll, but surely this is more murky because the user replaces it... :ponder:
