Debian Sarge new installer..

Recommended Posts

ok so i got the latest Sarge a couple days ago, and still haven't figured out how to get it to actually install.. i've seen countless installation guides and walkthroughs for the new Debian installer, yet none have anything to do with the one i'm using..

first of all, i don't GET a menu like this on my version (officially labeled "Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 "Sarge" - fsn.hu unofficial i386 Binary-1" according to the readme), but instead beneath where it says "Detect CD-ROM devices" all i get is an option to drop to ash shell.. and beneath that i get "Reboot computer".. so, i go to the shell and then i'm clueless to what to do next.. there are a bunch of binaries i can run in /bin and /sbin, but nothing seems to have me choose packages i want to install, or to configure partitions or anything..

so my question is what can i do while in the shell to install or should i just get another Sarge release (please no Woody, the thing is prehistoric)?

thanks for any help..

If you want Sarge then install Knoppix.

Once you use the Knoppix HD install script you end up with Debian-Testing.

It just the easiest way to get to Sarge.

nah, i'd rather go for the real thing.. besides, i deleted Knoppix.. PCLinuxOS is much more complete and professional.. being a LiveCD, i could care less if it was based on Debian or Mandrake.. the thought about doing a HD installation from a LiveCD makes me cringe anyways..

and that's the thing, i'm not looking for the easiest way out.. i'm sure Mandrake is much more easier.. i want to get my hands dirty here, but i just haven't seen any documentation on my particular installer..

Well, when you're done with that you can reinvent the wheel.

yea.. screw it.. apparently fsn.hu is some obscure unnoficial installer and not a whole lot of people are supporting it.. :(

i'll get a new official Sarge then..

if anyone has anything to add about this installer, feel free to do so..

The latest version of the debian installer being beta2 isn't that new. Tried it a month ago. Very nice and they made installation much more simple than debian SID.

I think to be able to access the menu at will, you will have to boot the cd and at prompt, type expert to enter the expert mode (which is the most flexible).

Just be sure what you downloaded was and is the debian-installer (Based on latest sarge. cd weights around ~120mb).

nah, expert mode just lets me set more advanced options, but i'm still left with the shell in the end.. the problem is i accidentally downloaded some weird unnofficial Sarge snapshot that throws you out to battle it out with ash..

btw, i'm not planning on doing a netinstall, rather just burn 1 or 2 cds and install from there.. so doing the installer-only thing is not the way for me..

also i downloaded the latest Sarge, official this time, through jigdo and even though it checked and approved the image as error free, i get weird text when trying to boot off it..

IDK.. i'll try again, and see what happens.. christ.
