(mac) turn off sleep mode when closing lid

Recommended Posts

Here is a trick:

Plug in a mouse. Shut the lid. Yank out the mouse. (the machine should come out of sleep with the lid still closed.

This only temporarily brings it out of sleep mode. After about 15 seconds it goes to sleep again.

There are a few hacks out there for this purpose, but most of them do not work on Panther. I'll see if I can find some for you.

I wouldn't recommend it however, as the heat generated by the machine can damage the LCD screen. I find it best just to turn the brightness to off when I want to leave my machine on at night or save power.

Now if you planned to do this and throw it into a bag so you can listen to music while walking, well that's just asking to fry your laptop and void your warranty.

The powerbook will wake up when closed if it detects activity on the USB ports. The iBook will retain its sleep state unless you apply a hack to your kernel and recompile it. (or use a premade patch -- none are available for Panther)

And you do not want to do this, it will shut down anyways because of a power management daemon ater maybe 10 or 15 minutes -- not to mention that you will burn you LCD screen due to the heat dissipating through the keyboard.

You need to the "Clam Shell" hack.

But, the iBook runs VERY hot with the lid closed. It uses the the palm rest to give off heat.

i have an ibook and also a powerbook :)

hmmm i guess i should use my ipod instead :)

The palm rests and keyboard are hardly even warm on my iBook unless I am using accessing or writing lots of data to the hard drive. The bottom of the iBook (g3) gets a lot hotter.

I dont think it would damage the screen unless your HD was really hot and you had the screen closed for a long time over it.

The palm rests of the PB 12'' get hotter then my iBook, and those support clamshell mode, and I dont see much damage happening to those.

I used KisMac to do this once when I thought it would be useful (this was a while back on jag, not sure it works with panther) but it isnt that useful. I just leave my iBook on all the time now, or in sleepmode when I am not downloading anything (rarely).

Hmm, that's odd, it works fine on my PowerBook, and it is basically what Apple recommends doing to play DVD's with the lid closed, according to the knowledge base.
