kemical
does anyone know if this is a new fork of xfree4.4? only reason i ask is because while going through the xf86config it only showed video memory up to 28k rather than the higher values i saw on xfree4.4.. i did a cvs download of the xorg server project so it should be the latest files/patches.. i did a XFree86 --version and it showed it as being build in 2003, but some changes on feb 29 2004 which only leads me to believe they just updated some changelogs and version numbers :\ does anyone have an exact answer on if im updating or actually going down some versions? metal_dragen Veteran Posted March 12, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 12, 2004 The Freedesktop.org X Server was started with a 4.3 branch of the code. They would not use 4.4 because of the non-GPL compatible license it uses.
kemical
so does that mean im using older code? or is it comparably updated along side xfree86? and this is the X.org project, not freedesktop's Xserver
DTR
Can you install nvidia drivers (if you even do not own such card, please try it)?

revvo
ow this is interesting! I'd love to read the feedback you're preparing to give to the community :D can't wait for some sort of "beta-equivalent" release! (have bad luck with early builds of "x" named program lol. tend to break em!)
kemical
unfornutately i couldn't get the nvidia drivers to install correctly.. it seems with these later builds of xfree there are some complications with their glx implementation and nvidia's latest drivers.. im taking a stab in the dark here and suggesting everyone waits until updated drivers are released to work with later/upcoming versions of XFree and it's 'forks' .. i could be mistaken and it just could be the fact that ive done so much testing on this machine with unstable builds that i have sent my box into a frenzy so this weekend ill go over it and do some fresh installs on these test boxes i have and report back on a side note with the XFree 4.4 branch i did manage to bring up X somewhat with the nvidia drivers but it went into a 640x480 mode with just a non useable mouse pointer :(
kongit
 xfree86 4.4 works great with ati. I have heard good things about xorg, but 4.4 works great, licensing aside, so until xorg or another like it can better xfree I will stick with xfree. Why downgrade over a silly issue? NinjaOfLove
I've heard that xorg is actually newer then 4.4 in some ways. Using 4.3 here, no driver problems, and all my games work fine.
HoochieMamma
OK... Point 1 Xfree86 is NOT under the GPL never has been. The change in the licencing is to do with promotion and distribution and requires that anyone distributing xfree4.4 need to add attribution to all promotional material and product packaging. X.freedesktop.org is a re-implementation of X to fix a number of defficiencies in Xfree86 including adding support for real transparency and backing store buffers (so the application doesn't have to redraw on every expose event) www.x.org is irrelevant. kemical
you guys got off topic, i just asked if the xorg project was in fact ahead of the xfree86 project as far as compatilbity, driver support, etc.. and how do you enable this true transparency?
