  1. 1. Could SATA be the problem on the new server?

    • 1. Yes, SATA like EIDE generates too much work for the CPU to handle many small requests.

Did you then from the second partition move it to an external backup, or do you just keep all the backups on the second partition?

Yeah, they are then backed up to remote sever, at 3AM GMT, Soon we are looking to get another HDD, and do it just between them both.

The backup is causing our problems, and yes backup does take hours. theplanet are aware of our issue and have informed us they are looking into it.

when backup isn't enabled we have sub 1 server loads (like now at the time of this post)

The backup must happen between 6pm and 1am EST. I'd hazard a guess that is also one of the busiest times for Neowin. Yes, things are working properly now (9:30am EST). Would it not make sense, in the meanwhile, to reschedule the backup when some less popular part of the world is in "prime time".

whynot just get SCSI drives?
Timdorr already pointed out that SATA drives isn't the issue.
or go back to old server with more bandwidth? its not like we need the extra 10GB

We couldn't possibly expand any further with ev1.

The old server was slower (dual 2.4's versus dual 2.8's) and and had less bandwidth (1200GB versus 2000GB).

Considering that SATA drives have TCQ, stacked with Linux' elevator (if it's actually used), you can get quite nice performance from these drives.
