Safari needs a swift kick in the pants

This is really starting to bug me. I've got an iBook G3 900 with 640MB RAM and it seems every time I load a page or open a new tab, Safari beachballs on me. It also seems to happen when entering text or at any other time it feels like. It's really starting to **** me off and I don't seem to have any explanation for the issue...

OT: I got an iPod mini today

Im pretty sure you know about the Check Spelling As You Type Feature in Safari, actually I think you might have been the one that clued me onto it here on Neowin, but if you for some reason did not now I would try to disable that. It seems like when that is on and you are typing on let say Neowin for example, I sometimes get a small slowdown on my Dual G4. just a suggestion that im sure you already knew about anyway but I know that slows entering text down no matter what. No, that doesn't have any effect. It's a complete beachball, not just slow down. It's *really* annoying, too :/

OT: It's a green one. Last they had :)

Tim, this is a known issue. It has been discussed at length with Hyatt and they are working on a fix for it. The Prominent problem being when reloading 1 or more background tabs, the active tab becomes bunk until the others are done reloading.

BTW, the mini is awesome eh? I got mine the day they came out and immediately got rid of my 3g one, the mini is it! SOOOO great.

I would agree with that, but it happens without any tabs open. For instance, I was just looking on edmunds.com for price quotes for a car I'm getting (Mazda 3!) and it beachballed when I was just clicking around. As you can see, it's pretty darn annoying...

jagedEdge: According to the creash reporter logs, I haven't had Safari crash on me since January.

I'll try excluding it from APE messing about with it, and see if that's it. Because it's the only thing I can think of :/

Yep, same here. Trust me I know exactly what you are talking about. Camino is 500 percent faster for me lately, but I just cannot leave Safari. I remember when it came out and it was the fastest thing on the planet, lol. Oh, to have those days again.

Safari is definitely one of the only apps I ever see a beachball in and it would seem it should be on the list of ones I never do.

some sites seem to do this to me (like ign.com). every page load beachballs for like 30 seconds and then the page displays. might have something to do with interpretation of certain code...

Might be better to try something like Firefox.

Even slower than Safari in my own tests... so until they fix that, nope.

Sometimes... ok right now... safari is being a little sluggish while i enter text... but usually I just close all my windows again and it fixes itself. *shrug*

yeah safari is getting a lil bit sluggish lately, but i thought it was because of my outdated PowerBook, anyone with a dual G5 having the same problem?

I am a little disappointed to hear that the 10.3.3 update did not fix it. There are many people with G5s having the same problem. It is definitely something wrong with the program itself. Especially considering how lightning fast Camino is now with opening tabs and the same. Remember the good ole days when safari first came out and it was the fastest thing ever? Ahhh, Nostalgia.

I'd be interested to know if everyone having this problem is running APE and or SS? NeoMayhem are you running them?

Why can I not edit my posts anymore? Weird.

Anyway, small update. Safari is back to it's greatness! In fact it feels much faster than 1.1 did.

Here is what I did. I downloaded 10.3.3 and installed it. Rebooted. After restart I immediately opened up disk utility and repaired permissions. Rebooted. After restart, opened up Safaricon and restored my theme and then opened up Safari.

I can now open as many bookmarks as I want and it doesn't lag one bit. Pages are also loading noticeably faster. It could have just been cleaning the pipes or whatever, but it is sure great to have this browser working great again.

My G5 and PB are both still running 10.3.2.

I don't have these problems on my G5. Sometimes Safari may beachball when showing the "add bookmark" sheet animation, but only very briefly and only when the machine is otherwise busy. My upcoming RAM upgrade will probably fix that.

My PB is a different story. Safari has always been a bit slow on my PB.. at least since 0.85 it has. When I have several tabs open it can take a while to switch from one tab to another. When typing in certain input boxes (like the one here at Neowin), the text lags really badly, and I can't find any option to turn off spell-checking as I type?

Anyway.. My point is that I haven't noticed anything specific about 1.2. 1.1 was already a little laggy on my PB, and 1.2 is just fine on my G5.

Still, if I could get another browser to integrate properly with .Mac, I would switch :)

Glad to see someone else aside from myself noticing Safari's sluggishness in the past few updates. It's not the best browser (to some it never was) on OS X anymore people. Time to get used to it.

I'll try repairing permissions (I won't reboot, cause I'm not into that sort of thing. I had 80 days uptime before 10.3.3 :D ). And I think my Safaricon changes got overwritten by 1.2.1, but I can try that as well.
