aldo
So I downloaded the new Mandrkae 10 community version as I wanted to have some change from Fedora. The install went very badly - graphical install would not work (locked up hard at the 3rd step - security) and I had to do a text install. The first problem I noticed was the message saying: 'Bringing up eth0 [FAILED]' when I boot up. However, when I logged into the system I could browse webpages fine. While browsing webpages I noticed that my scroll wheel wasn't working, so I went to the 'configure your system' option in the KDE menu and ... it crashed hard. I then rebooted using the switch on the front of my box and tried again - sucess, but then it did the exact same thing when I clicked the 'mouse' entry. I also can't kill X server with control - alt - backspace as if I do that (or even try to switch to a virtual terminal) the system locks up. My hardware (nothing really special IMO): Athlon 1800+ 768MB PC2100 RAM 2xHDD MSI KT400 mobo MSI nVidia Geforce Ti4200 128mb MS Intellimouse Optical (using USB)
markwolfe Veteran Posted March 13, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 13, 2004 I have heard of these kinds of things happening with Mandrake 10. I have also heard of flawless installs. I think that it is still very new, and I would give it a few more weeks before installing (let final fixes come out).
MR_Candyman
Ya, from installing the cooker releases and having them come out with the final so fast, I can already tell it's very flawed. The cookers were horrid for stability. If you wanna get the scroll wheel working though (depending on your mouse though) you could use this: http://dorward.me.uk/linux/mouse/ It's for the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer, but it does work for others aswell. aldo
I can get the mouse working fine by using the Mandrake config tools, but they crash up all the time. It does seem to be a case of all or nothing with mandrake - ie it works great first time or just doesnt work very well at all...
Shadrack
I installed Mandrake 10 on my work computer (P4 1.7, 512MB, nVidia GForce2) and it installed great. Have had no problems with it so far. Mouse works fine. The install was really snappy too. I come home to install Mandrake 10 on my home computer (AMD 2400+ 512MB ATI Radeon 9800) and the graphical install went fine. However, I'm having the following problems: I can't get my sound to work. It says that I have no /dev/dsp, and on bootup i think I see a message flash about not having a soundcard. I have onboard sound (CMI8738), and in Harddrak it shows it. On every boot up my HP Deskjet 930 sends a page through right at "initializing eth0:" where it hangs for awhile. I can't get a modem internet connection to work through the mandrake software. I could get it to work with 9.2, but for some reason there seems to be no place to "connect". i'm pretty impresed with how good everything is looking. I'm looking forward to the final release, hopefully some of my problems will get fixed. I think I'm going to try to get another sound card. This onboard sound doesn't want to work with linux at all.
