weird win2mac floppy disk errors

Recommended Posts

I?m searching for any possible explanation for this odd reoccurring error I?m having.

I have a group of users that are on Mac X v10.2 they do data entry at home and bring in text (.txt) files in and then put them into the network share for them to be processed at a later time. This all works, simi-ok.

There is an odd diskette issue when taking diskettes back and forth from Windows to Mac. If the files are deleted off the diskette while on the Mac machine, most of the time that same diskette is useable in the windows machine. If the files are not deleted the diskette returns errors in the windows machine, ?disk write-protected?, ?disk-full? or ?no diskette in drive?. Also, this is random it seems, after a few trips (3 or so in a week, same diskette) the windows diskette drive starts to fail reading / writing to any diskette.

Example is copy files to diskette from windows, take disk to Mac machine (normally happens in 3rd or 4th time), Mac machine says disk is empty, or works fine, then back to windows, (randomly) disk corrupt, wont read, nothing, toss diskette, start over? or it works fine for awhile, then start windows starts giving errors and fails, in the last month I have had 4 floppy drives fail in windows machines, all from this problem.

The diskette also starts making noise, loud clicking, and (no other way to describe this) growling (that annoying ?grrr-aaaaattt? sound). Once this starts I end up having to replace the disk drive. I can?t keep doing that.

At first I thought it was just the disk drive was old, but now its happening on brand new disk drives, and it is also occurring more. I have not found any support information about problems on this topic.

If anyone has seen this or has any ideas, they would be most appreciated.

I know the Mac machines are using Mac os X v10.2 if more is needed I can get that info

The windows machines are windows 98 SE, windows 2000.

Thanks

I don't know how to help you with the Floppy question, but I might sugguest you move everyone over from discs to USB Thumb Drives, these things are amazing and don't cost that much anymore :)
