emac or ibook ?

Recommended Posts

i know basically nothing about macs, the only mac ive ever used was one i used in primary school which ran old mac os (maybe 8)

because it was difficult to use i grew up thinking macs were complicated, untill i visted my uncle and had a go on his imac, now i want to get rid of my pc and upgrade to mac for life, i am looking at either a emac or a ibook.

which one is the better ?

emac specs

1GHz PowerPC G4

256MB SDRAM

80GB Ultra ATA drive

SuperDrive

ibook specs

933 MHz PowerPC G4

256K L2 cache @ 933MHz

14-inch TFT Display

1024x768 resolution

256MB DDR266 SDRAM

40GB Ultra ATA drive

Combo drive

ATI Mobility Radeon 9200

32MB DDR video memory

out of these two which would be the better buy, i am not concerned about portablity or size, i just want a current mac which i can run panther on and use video and audio software without too much 'lagg' or problems, also is it possible to run 4 usb devices at once on ibooks and emacs, because i looked at the apple site and the ibook only has 2 usb and the emac 3, so how could i run 4 devices ?

any information someone can give me would be great.

I just saw a usb hub yesterday, which would use one usb port and re create 4 more...its $40 canadian,

so dont base your descision off usb

EDIT: here

4 port usb hub

or

7 port usb hub

thanks for the hub idea, dont know why i didnt think of that, as for adding more ram, does it use regular ram ? or do i have to buy special mac ram ?

while i am on the subject, can i use pc hardware in macs, like maybe replacing the video card ? or is it special mac hardware ?

it should use the same ram as long as its the same specs. be sure to buy ram from companies other than apple cause they rip you off. the emac is obviously more powerful but the ibook is not far behind. you should base your desicion on whether you want the mobility and to pay extra for it. the thing about the emac and imac, the only hardware you can upgrade on them is the ram and wifi. the vidcard is soldered on and so are the hdd, optical drive, and all the other parts. if you want to upgrade these you might figure out how but doing it yourself is really dangerous and having a guy do it for you would cost an arm and a leg.

Edit: have you considered a powermacG4 or a G5? the G4 shouldnt cost more than what you are paying but it dosent come wiht a monitor. it is upgradeable and i think you can put most vidcards on the market in one (special mad editions not pc ones tho).
