Ridgeburner
the hard drive , in the ipod, is as any other HD for your computer. You never get the FULL amount you pay for. Just the way it is
Ravager
I think they advertise it as if 1000kb = 1mb as opposed to 1024kb = 1mb, which is the actual format. I may be wrong though.
giga Veteran Posted March 16, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 16, 2004 Congrats on yoor iPod. On the back of the box it should say: 1 GB = 1 billion bytes; actual formatted capacity less So in other words...1 meg is really like 1024 kb..not 1000kb..so you lose space a bit.. Edit: damn 2 people beat me to it. :ninja:

Tim Dorr Veteran Posted March 16, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 16, 2004 There is also space lost to the filesystem. It uses some of the data on the hard drive to inform the operating system where the files actually are.
SPeedY_B
Surprised me when I first plugged mine in, total around 36.something GB. But yeah, that's just the way HDD's are spec'd. Although when they get large enough it's going to get ridiculous the amount of space we "lose" :\
Garry
I can't remember the specifics, but I know there is a court battle *somewhere* regarding the advertising of any hard drive size - and quite right too.

Endoscient
its ez'ier for enegineerings to build where 1,000,000 = 1 gb. the y arent thing to take ur money. all drives are like that
thetman
just because all dirves are like that doesnt meen they arent taking our money, the claim all over the box what you can hold with X GB but when you format you dont get the amount of spacethat the outside of the box claims you will be able to have. they should compensate for this formatting or advertise the formatted space (using a general fat32 or ntfs and a chart on the back for others)
