dittbub
just for the heck of it i want to install 3 linux distros. i wanna find the right one for me. i installed redhat but meh. so i'll give fedora a go. i'll also install slackware too cause its the one used at my school. and then for the third one, this is where you come in. i dunno which other one to try out. what would you suggest? is there a linux distro that is better than others at playing audio and video of sorts or something? MR_Candyman
I'd PERSONALLY skip Fedora... Slack is a good choice and my personal fav. as it can be set up quickly and runs really well. I'd suggest Debian or Gentoo if you really wanna get into it.
kongit
It really depends. I love slackware and gentoo, but I can't get some of my hardware to work with them due to closed source drivers, rpms, and the like. So I installed fedora core1, and I am in the process of getting it up ta snuff. While it will never be as fast the gentoo that is also on my computer, I have made significant process mostly my updating the kernel to 2.6.4-love and configuring to match my computer exactly. No more extra modules and stuff running that don't need to be. If you don't have that much in the way of extra hardware like a printer without opensource drivers, a pda like an ipaq, or whatever I suggest you start with slackware. Gentoo, while not hard to install is much more difficult than slackware and much much more time consuming. In the end gentoo will be faster and probably better, but it might not be worth the effort until you know what you are doing and can do a stage 1 in one day. Of course if your computer is slow it won't matter between slackware and gentoo as they will perform about the same. I suggest you get to know fedora or slackware, and if you really like it then stick with it. However you will always have the option to install gentoo sometime later. :)
