marineintel
Here I am, all hyped up... I decide I am going to go download skin studio, I mean I have graphics talent somewhat and a lot of good ideas, from doing a lot of research on what people want... I will admit, I don't use stardock stuff anymore, mainly because it takes up system resources beyond what I feel like giving up :) So I get there and see they are charging for the better version of it... Makes me sad, i wasn't even going to get it to use it for myself, jsut to help others and hopefully bring them more people, once they see my skins and the skins of others... I just don't get it, why charge for anything that is only there to help them with profit? I don't have a problem with buying software, but not for when it isn't to benefit me financially, timewise, or to benefit my computer, but come on... Oh well... See what I can do with what I have here... :)
Boeing 787
It would make sense that the builder would be free and that the viewer (windowsblinds) cost money but Stardock has it reversed. I'm cool with it though because I do use Windowsblinds free when I find a theme I like.

They both have "free" versions and full commercial versions. It's just you don't get as many features, and you "pay" for those you do get with nags. Giving the whole thing out free would be iffy, if only on a "how much do you pay the SkinStudio programmer" basis (obviously I don't know too much about their internal compensation plan, but I'd assume at least part of it is how many units are sold). Incidentally, there's nothing stopping you making skins via notepad - that's how I do it, even while having SkinStudio as part of my ODNT subscription (no, you can't have my copy :-). That's another reason not to give it out free - what incentive is there for the programmer if they get paid the same no matter how much they improve the program? *g*
