Shadrack
alright, i'm sure you are all sick of hearing about my sound problems. But I've got some new information. This is what is coming up at startup: Starting ALSA version 1.0.2c: emu10k1 [OK] Doing alsactl to restore mixer settings.... [OK] Starting service sound: alsactl: save_state: 1061: No soundcards found... Can't open /root/tmp/asound.state_tmp: No such file or directory. Setting mixer settings alsactl: Load_state: 1134: No soundcards found... [Failed] in my dmesg I still get: "EMU10K1_Audigy: probe of 0000:00:0a.0 failed with error -16" if i use the OSS driver (emu10k1) instead of the ALSA (snd-emu10k1) one it reports an IRQ error in my dmesg. /proc/pci tells me that it is running on IRQ 17, and there doesn't seem to be any conflicts with any other cards. I ran through the sound troubleshooter in mandrake and it appears like the modules ARE loaded, but i'm getting a No soundcard found whenever i try to start the KDE sound server. /dev/dsp doesn't exist, that may be the problem. I don't know. I'm full of noob. My system: Soyo Dragon Plus KT333 AMD Athlon XP 2400+ ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 512 MB PC2100 SB Live! 5.1 *only PCI card* running: Mandrake 10 Community / Windows XP Pro (can get sound to work). Thanks for your time. -Nic
kongit
Did you run alsaconf or set it up manually? Or did the mandrake 10 try to set it up and it didn't work? I have found that trying to get alsa to work right in fedora was a bit of a task compared to slackware. I suggest you grab the alsa-driver, alsa-lib, and alsa-utils rpms for mandrake, wherever you can get them from. Then try alsaconf. If that won't work, go to the alsa website: www.alsa-project.org, and find your card there and follow its instructions.
Shadrack
sounds good (well..not yet...crazy pun). I'll give that a try. My understanding is Mandrake doesn't come with the kernel source code. How can i find the source code that I need to install to make these modules? And I shouldn't have to recompile my kernel....right? just make modules and modules install. then I can run the alsaconf right...?
markwolfe Veteran Posted March 19, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 19, 2004 My understanding is Mandrake doesn't come with the kernel source code. How can i find the source code that I need to install to make these modules? Mandrake must supply the source code, or they will be violating the GPL. It may not be installed by default, but it is probably on one of the CDs. Legally, they can also make their CDs available for download, but have the source separate (like on an FTP site). The GPL doesn't require that the source be included with the binaries, just that they are available (and a reasonable charge isn't forbidden, either, in cases where they elect to ship the source on a CD or what-not) Check your CDs for the source, first, if you need to have it to complile... Shadrack
Nevermind about the source code. Its on the CD's you just have to install it. W/ Mandrake 9.2 it was a seperate download. Thanks.
