longwilli
mandrake, fedora, lycoris are good to start with find the stuff you need HERE
Ultra Frosty
Well, if your arent a advanced computer user you might want to wait a bit and learn some stuff, otherwise I suggest you go with SuSE. It's painless to install and has everything that you will need to run linux full time. Download SuSE & Installation Guide If your running a Pentium III, Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon processor, choose i386, and choose Live-Eval first to make sure your hardware will work. threetonesun
Fedora will be by far the easiest to learn with.

markwolfe Veteran Posted March 19, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 19, 2004 and whats the best Linux that boots from a CD? If you mean *runs* from a CD (as in a LiveCD distro), I agree with Knoppix. But, they all will boot from a CD for a full install. I keep a knoppix and suse LiveCD with me most times to demo Linux to those who want to see what it can do (plus knoppix makes a GREAT recovery distro) ;)
kongit
Actually the Sun Desktop System is better than knoppix in my opinion, but you can't download it. I got a magazine that head the demo for it, but it is really a full time since the demo never runs out. But knoppix is very nice. :)
CoolioVendetta
I used Mandrake 9.2 as my first linux distro, worked great and i thought was very good as a beginner OS, the only problem i had was getting my USB Alcatel Speedtouch modem working. Since then ive moved back to windows, i like VS.Net 2003 too much :(
slimshady89
hmmm ... I am currently downloading mandrake and SuSE ...
kongit
I prefer fedora over mandrake. I couldn't install....well I didn't install suse...because my network card isn't supported by the boot cd and I didn't feel like making another cd of packages. I am using fedora full time as my printer requires a distro that is based around rpms. Fedora, Red Hat, mandrake, and suse being the main three. I have to have my printer for school so I am stuck without slackware or gentoo. :(

[bear]
seems very fast to me.. edit: actually the config area is the only problem im having with it.. requires me clicking over and over lol but then again its an early 10.0.. ;)
nuka_t
i tried mandrake 9.1 a long while ago and it wouldnt boot (it got up until the boot screen and then the screen went into standby after the text crap was shown) Edit: it installed fine thoough. i even reinstalled it a couple times just to be sure that i hadnt screwed anything up. i tried fedora core 1 and it wouldnt install because it didnt support my vidcard. i had a pci radeon 7000 on the 9.1 pc and a radeon 96xt on the fedora. i would like to try fedora again but i cant get it installed. the frist time i tried it said using generic 3d accelerator drivers and let be go into install prog but i got an error later on. the same happpened the second time. i thoughtt "third times a charm" and tried it again. this time it said it did not detect a 3d accelerato and made me do text install. being the first time i install a linux distro, partitioning my hdd in text mode scared teh **** outa me and i quit install. aldo
You should use Fedora really because RedHat based distro's are the 'Microsoft' standard of the Linux world. You will find a redhat/fedora RPM before any other type of package. So unless you want to be limited to tarballs which are not perfect for anyone or a small set of software for your distro, I'd suggest getting Fedora. Nuka_T: I'm fairly sure that fedora core 2 will fix these Radeon issues everyone complains about. Also, partitioning in text mode isn't that scary. I did it on Mandrkae 7.0 back in 2000 and managed to come out ok with it;).
slimshady89
it seems a lot of people are having problems to get Mandrake 10.0 going so I am definitely staying off that ... I am not gonna use SuSE either becuase I heard it won't let me read NTFS drive and I have all my mp3 collection there so maybe fedora ...
MR_Candyman
eh? when I ran SuSe, I had no problem reading NTFS...the problem all distros have though is safe writing to NTFS...

CaKeY
HOw slow is Mandrake 10? Ive hear lots of people saying its slow, but im wondering how slow as i thought mandrake 9.2 was pretty slow :/ Its not slow! Should be noticably faster than most other major rpm based distros. http://www.madpenguin.org/Article1040.html Mandrake 10 proved to be extremely responsive compared to its predecessors, or even other distros in its class. It certainly beats Red Hat and Fedora hands down. The system is still not Slackware or Gentoo fast, but it's close. Like I said earlier, the system is running kernel 2.6.3 and it is tweaked for performance, there is no doubt about it. On an old Intel Pentium II 400MHz system with 128MB of PC100 SDRAM it ran remarkably well. LindowsOS or Red Hat on the same system is unbearably slow and unresponsive. SUSE automatically sets up your NTFS drives as icons on the desktop, you have to manually configure it on Fedora as the 'driver' (called module in Linux) isn't included. The best way to get SUSE for free is with a network install, instructions for this are at http://www.linuxgazette.com/node/view/ - follow these guidelines but note you need a network connection and to know which network module you need for your NIC (the livecd should help you find this). markwolfe Veteran Posted March 21, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 21, 2004 it seems a lot of people are having problems to get Mandrake 10.0 going so I am definitely staying off that ...From what I have heard, there are only some problems for some people on install. Like needing to boot off of CD#2 first.. Once installed, most comments are positive.I am not gonna use SuSE either becuase I heard it won't let me read NTFS drive and I have all my mp3 collection there so maybe fedora ...The SuSE LiveCD doesn't have NTFS read support built-in. The real FTP download does (or at least can be selected and compiled in). Same with Fedora. It defaults to no NTFS support. If you need it, you have to add it in.You really can't go to wrong, whichever distro you pick... ;)
