Veiva
I installed Manrake 9.2, then when it asked where to install GRUB, I installed it to MBR. Can I restore the Windows boot manager without reformatting? Can I unistall it from Mandrake, or will fdisk /mbr just restore the MBR?
hornett
Use the XP recorvery command line option on the cd and use fixmbr on your windows partition.
Veiva
My computer came with XP installed. I'll try using the CD that it came with.
Veiva
When I type it in, a message says: ** CAUTION ** This computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record. FIXMBR may damage your partition tables if you proceed. This could cause all the partition tables to become inaccesible. If you are not having problems accesing your drive, do not continue. Are you sure you want to write a new MBR? I'm not having problems, I just don't want GRUB anymore. So, will my drive become unusable if I use FIXMBR? :(
Post-It Note
The second (and last) time I installed linux with LILO, it wouldn't boot back into windows, even if I chose the option. It just came up a black screen with the blinking cursor. I tried the /fixmbr and /fixboot, and it DID screw it up, something about OS not found at boot. Fixed that by putting in the boot floppy made with rawwrite and the cdboot.img file and selecting to fix the boot (for linux). I then made a windows boot disk that loads ntdlr and boot.ini and command.com but it said something about HAL.dll missing (it wasn't). I didn't want to both with fixing it since I needed to be in Windows pretty quick, so I reinstalled windows, and restored the disk with norton ghost. In conclusion, /fixmbr should not screw up your drives. Well... it didn't for me.
