Ethere
It's not the newest type of iMac, but, I do have an OS 8.5 restore cd. On the CD itself, it says to boot from this CD, hold down the C key while booting. That does nothing. I try running the "Apple Software Restore" application from the cd, but it tells me I don't have a drive that has Classic installed. I'm not sure about Macs as it is. Could someone point me in the right direction? I would like to clean install this OS from the disk I have. It currently has 10.2 on it, but this mac is too slow to run osx. Any help would be appreciated.
Statikk
You'll need to get it to boot to cd or it won't be able to restore. Is it a tray loading or a slot loading iMac?
Ethere
It's a slot loading.
thetman
throw some more ram into it, i think the slot loads can get at least 512 total, that sould run panther nicely
danbalsh
Yeah, Panther can run quite well with lots of memory even on a G3 iMac :) you don't wanna run OS8.5 on it, it's like ancient!
Ethere
Yeah, I'll try to do that first....how much does it cost to buy the OS?

silversky
Free if you download yellowdog linux :) That's what I did. My big task is to get RoseGarden running on it, for composing. The story is that I got a lime 266mhz imac that has never been upgraded. I replaced the stupid round 1-button mouse (I like lots of buttons) with a portable microsoft optical w- scrollwheel, installed yellowdog, and now it runs fine. The mac actually runs things better than my linux box (loving the ppc processor), but compiling everything gets to be a pain. I'm not saying you should do this, but it's cheaper than panther and more ram. Have phun!
nuka_t
why would you want a yellow dog running all over your rose garden and messing it up?
