Mandrake Linux 10.0 Problem

Recommended Posts

Alright. I burnt all 3 cds of Mandrake 10, installed.. and then it asked me for CD4. I haven't even seen a CD4 on any mirrors. I just hit cancel and it continues with the rest of the installation.. then I get the other user adding part, add my user and the installer crashes. I see something in the console about invalid argument I think..

I then couldn't even get into Windows. I booted into my Windows XP CD, went to the recovery console, expecting some sort of system recovery, which I didn't see. Then I rebooted again and Windows worked.

Anyway, does anyone know what options I can pick in the installer without having a warning about CD4 being needed?

BTW, is anyone else having problems posting?

Well, I'm having problems posting, but I'm sitting on a P133 with 32 MB of RAM, and I'm viewing this page through LYNX, the text internet browser. But other than that, yeah, no probs posting. :)

Anyway... so it crashed as you added a user...

Does it boot correctly into linux (If you were wise enough to make a floppy disk to boot from...)

I can't even boot into it.. it gives me crap about a Kernel Panic at boot. BTW, I couldn't even boot off CD1. I had to put in CD2 and boot from that, then it said something about that wasn't a Mandrake CD and then I put in CD1 from there and booted into the installer. Anyone having similiar problems. I don't have a floppy drive, so.. I can't even make a boot disk. The installer actually crashes before you get a chance to even make one. Anyway.. I have experience with Linux, I've even installed Gentoo a few times.. I have no idea why this is giving me so many problems..

what does it say at the kernel panic? what is the error?

edit: if you couldn't boot from CD1 (yet you can boot from CD2) then there is a possibility that you incorrectly burned the disc and /or you had an error while downloading.

Did you run md5summer?

I don't remember it exactly, but something along the lines of, "Kernel Panic - attempting to kill init" and my keyboard LEDs flash, and it just sits there. LILO didn't even install, becuase again, the installer crashed before it could, and I'm blaming that on the CD4 crap(which I don't even see ANYWHERE!). I just tried hitting F9 to get to the built in boot menu on the motherboard(to choose the drive to boot from) and picking that drive.

What is this about CD4!?!?

Theres a posting on the errata page from mandrake. This problem with not being able to boot off cd1 only affects some users. I personally just install mdk10 last night and had no problems booting from cd1. The temporary workaround is to boot from cd2 and switch cds, which you discovered on your own.

I noticed its not the user add section that crashes for me. Right after I choose my settings for Autologin it crashes. It drops me in the console and the next thing I see is about network. I have the onboard network the nForce chipset boards use, if that matters.

CD 4 is only available to Mandrake Club members. It's mentioned in the release notes on the install CD, if I remember correctly. Not having it won't affect normal system operation, it just gives you access to a few extra programs that non-members don't get. I'm not certain what you can de-select to not have the installer ask for that CD, but what you did is correct, which is also mentioned in the release notes.

Not haveing the 4th CD isn't a problem.

When you tell the install that you don't have it by clicking cancel when prompted, it will remember it and only list packages off of the first 3 cd's in the mandrake package progy.
