xmr
Just sold my 12" Powerbook 1st gen, now I'm missing OS X already. I'm thinking of getting another Powerbook, maybe even a 15" when they update the speeds. I kinda hope they update in May/June... caus then I might buy one when I'm in the US. Only problem would be that the US Powerbooks have really crappy keyboards! Why do Americans need 'tab', 'capslock', 'delete' etc printed on the keyboard!? It just makes it look as if it's designed for stupid people. But for a saving of about ?600 ($1100) I think I could put up with it : I wonder whether they will just speed bump them or actually bring out a G5 Powerbook.... :oo

Diffused Mind
I was reading that the G5 might be delayed a bit due to immense power consumption. And the only PowerBook I have is a 25Mhz 68030.

Pilsbury
I know how you feel :( Would there be any problems buying one in the US? Wouldn't you have to pay import duty and stuff on your way back? There's no problem bringing one home - the PSU is the same worldwide... Yes, you have to pay import duty... Unless you dump the box and carry it back in....
Dazzla Veteran Posted March 22, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 22, 2004 Well yeah. I know I'd more then likely get stung if I got it shipped here, but what if I opened it, put the box in a suitcase and the PB in with hand luggage or something. They wouldn't stop you at the airport and demand money would they?
andrew_simpson
you can do that, the import tax of a laptop is set at 0% you would just pay the VAT on it at the price you paid. i don't know if they demand the money there or if they issue you with a invoice as they already know you address and everything about you through your passport. you could dump the box and all other paper materials or send them to yourself back in the uk. Tim Dorr Veteran Posted March 22, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 22, 2004 I'd probably just leave the box with a friend in the US and have them send the thing back to you in the mail. Unless you're flying over there yourself, which would be optimal. If questioned about why they're sending you the laptop, just say you won it in a bet
xmr
Yeah, I sold my PB caus I got a good price for it & caus I know how cheap they are out in the USA.... and I'm gonna be out in the US for about 5 weeks this summer, backpacking round St. Louis, Chicargo, Boston then finishing in New York. I heard that if I buy it out there and use it, then they don't charge VAT/import duty, can anyone confirm this?
Fusion
I live in Canada currently for University. When I went home to the states to buy my powerbook, the day I came back up to school was on Canadian thanksgiving. Because of the holiday, the regular border guards were not working and some management from the bigger border were there. When they asked us if we bought anything, I denied it like I normally do, except this time they pulled me over. They searched the car and found my brand new powerbook and over 500 dollars of accessories like a base station, speakers, etc... They seized everything in the car and sold it back to me for over $1000 US. My 12" powerbook cost me close to $3000 dollars US after I was done paying the fine and the tax. The best thing to do with importing stuff, that I have since learned, is to put the laptop in your bag and take it back. Before you go, mail the box, manuals and accessories to yourself. This way you only have to declare the value of the box and manuals itself, which amounts to around $5 US. As you can imagine the tax on that is extremely cheap. Then, for warranty and return purposes, you will want to mail the receipt to yourself in a totally separate standard mail envelope. They cannot charge tax on the laptop because they have no proof that it is new. They charge import tax on the box, which is less than a dollar. They never know about the receipt as it is standard mail. Talk about hindsight.
aaron901
i was carrying three laptops in my backpack when i entered australian border earlier this year, one used PowerBook, one brand new iBook and one brand new Sony VAIO. they just asked me why i got 3 laptops, i just told them the iBook belongs to my sister, and i use both Mac and PC, can't live without any one of them. they just smiled and let me through. :D
