An mpg that'll play on WMP

Recommended Posts

Has any of you encoded a mpg file using transcode, mencoder or what ever, that'll play on Windows Media Player? I've Googled to no avail.

(I want to post some home movies on CD to relatives. I don't want to help them all to install DivX codecs  . I'd like quality comparable to VHS. I'm starting with a 640x480 25fps avi captured with mencoder.)

I have had great success with using the command line dvrecord (at least I think that is what it is, I am at work and don't have my history to rifle through on my Linux box...).

It instantly creates an .avi file from the firewire video data stream off my Sony camcorder.

Not sure what your setup is and what your options are... Do you use firewire, or an analog capture card?

Files like Divx also uses .AVI file extension. The decoder must be installed to separate the audio and video stream of the AVI. So it doesn't mean that an AVI file is created, you wont be needing Dixv codecs.

Depending on the tools you use, most on the market now uses Divx or Xvid encoders.

Referring to your problem you must encode the movie file in a RAW AVI (not encoded with any codecs). Downside to this, the file size would be huge. (Any encoding program can do this, it's in the settings/options)

Another method is to encode the movie in WMV (windows media video). Media player is bound to be able to play it. The quality is quite good at your 640x480 25fps.
