HellBender
I'm a little confused as to what to download to install Gentoo. I want to do a stage 1 install, but the Stage cds I found on the gentoo site are tar bz2's that are like 12mb big. Back before 2004.0, when I downloaded Gentoo, they were like 600 mb each. What do I download?
Dessimat0r
Stage 1 is fine - you'd normally compile everything in Gentoo, anyway.
HellBender
ftp://ftp.ucsb.edu/pub/mirrors/linux/gent...04.0/stages/x86 Is that what I'm supposed to download? I'm a little shaky since they're only <20mb each. I downloaded one and I just saw linux folders (/bin /usr /etc).. Am I supposed to burn it as a data cd? bladerunner81
you will want that one: ftp://ftp.ucsb.edu/pub/mirrors/linux/gent...vecd/universal/ pick one of the iso's (the bigger one has precompiled packs). the stage1-tarball is needed for bootstrapping the base-system, it's no livecd. but you want to download that one too as you need it for install. HellBender
Great, thanks! I'll download that now.
bladerunner81
good luck and i hope you have 1.) a second pc while compiling (as it takes the hell long) 2.) distcc on several pc's to spread the compile load 3.) read the setup guide on www.gentoo.org i myself have a ~x86-sys running kernel 2.6.5-rc1-love2 rock-solid... so if you don't use it for a mission-critical machine i suggest using ~86 for the fun of risking the sys with every update cycle (just joking :D )
