Southern Patriot
Has anyone else had this problem? Up2date in Fedora Core 1 is VERY slow, sometimes stalling completely. I'm certain that it's not a problem with my connection, because I can download from web sites very quickly. I have a 3Mbps cable line here, and I can't seem to get much more than 7KBps (which would be 56Kbps) rates in this program. Does it have some kind of rate limiting built in? Southern Patriot
So, does ANYONE have any comment on this?? Right now, it's averaging about 5KBps. At this rate, I think Fedora Core 2 will be out before I finish the updates on this machine!! Also, anyone have any idea how to get back to the option to NOT check the signatures on the files? It's annoying to have to confirm them all the time. I really thought I had unchecked that, but I guess I didn't.
Tim Dorr Veteran Posted March 23, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 23, 2004 You should change the mirror server on it. I did this to speed things up a bit. I would also consider install apt-get on there. I like it better than up2date :)
Southern Patriot
How do I change the server? I didn't see any option anywhere to do that.

Southern Patriot
Thanks. :) Any suggestions as to what site to change it to that might be faster than the default?
Moparx
aleron or mirrors.kernel.org :) you can get a list of mirrors from: http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors.html
markwolfe Veteran Posted March 23, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 23, 2004 I have Fedora, and I switched to yum over up2date. I like it, although I am not very knowledgeable in this, it is easy to type " yum check-update" or "yum update" to keep my system current. I had to change an entry (maybe two) in a config file - can't remember off the top of my head what file it was... But it has been more reliable and faster for me. Moparx
*nod* i also prefer yum over up2date. its all a matter of tastes though. if you do want a gui though, i suggest a combination of apt & synaptic to replace up2date :)

Southern Patriot
Looks like I'm gonna have to change it to another mirror because one of the packages it needs is missing (getting a 404 error that kills up2date) on kernel.org. edit: nevermind, found it on a different server and manually installed it. Smitjel
I use a combo of autoupdate with my mirror of choice and synaptic...works fine for me.
kongit
synaptic is the best for fedora I use redhat 9 now with ximian desktop and use red carpet. red carpet is better than synaptic in terms of reliability and speed, but it lacks program wise to synaptic. however if you install ximian desktop synaptic become useless as it wants to uninstall ximian desktop in order to install anything.
