patseguin Global Moderator Posted March 23, 2004 Global Moderator Share Posted March 23, 2004 My brother has a PC with iTunes installed and he wants to get an iPod. Will it work via FireWire on the PC? I seem to remember hearing that PC's could only use USB.
Dazzla Veteran Posted March 23, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 23, 2004 It works via Firewire on PC as well.
Hurmoth
It works via Firewire on PC as well. Firewire rules! I wish more things used Firewire
patseguin Global Moderator Posted March 23, 2004 Author Global Moderator Share Posted March 23, 2004 I assume that it will need a driver install though?
Dazzla Veteran Posted March 23, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 23, 2004 Not as far as I know, if the Firewire port is detected fine on the PC then I don't think you do. As long as the iPod Service is running in the backgrouns iTunes will just pick it up.
KXH
If you already have iTunes and a firewire card in teh computer, then you just plug the iPod into it and run the updater and it will add it as a mountable device to your windows OS and the iTunes Library and ask you if you want to sync the library with that particular iPod. Yes its that easy. And the nice thing about the firewire is that it charges the iPod as well as syncs it.
KXH
Sorry I was assuming that your brother was using Windows 2000, XP, or 2003 Server and NOT 9X. Who knows if anything works with 9X, should it decide to work at any given moment.
Garry
As far as I know, it simply uses the included Mass Storage Device driver on XP. Have never tried it on 98 though.
ThunderRiver
If you have firewire installed on your PC, you should be able to transfer files from your PC to iPod without any problems. The main concern is that iPod battery is charged through firewire port. Some female firewire port doesn't have the exact number of pins for power source to charge iPod. So unless you have an iPod cradle to charge your iPod, you are taking chances...
Hurmoth
But you also have to have the IPod software installed on the machine. You can go to http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/ for the IPod software (if you don't have the disc that came with the IPod or if you have an IPod mini, go to http://www.apple.com/ipodmini/download/ With that and ITunes, from what I know
patseguin Global Moderator Posted March 23, 2004 Author Global Moderator Share Posted March 23, 2004 Thanks alot guys. He does have Windows XP. He will have to install the iPod software when he buys it and he should be all set it looks like. His notebook is partly for the business. If we could run the business on Mac, I would switch every PC over in a heartbeat.
Fusion
You have to love some people's thought process. "Hmm, a question about an iPod on a PC, oh oh oh, I know, I'll post that in the Mac section." "Hmm, uh oh, there are three categories in the Mac section, my post is about Windows and the iPod, let's see here.... oh oh oh, I found it, the Discussing Mac OS section. That's it!"

I suppose I could have used the Hardware subforum though...
BTallack
I can plug my iPod into any WindowsXP machine with a Firewire port and it works automatically as a mass storage device. The one issue is that most PC Firewire ports aren't powered, so you have to unplug it from the PC to charge it. (Unless you have a SoundBlaster Audigy2 which is powered.) Fusion
I've got a firewire port on my audigy and my motherboard, so which should I use with an iPod? It shouldn't matter. My roommate has an old PC and it's motherboard firewire port is even powered. At least one of them *should* work. If not, I bought a firewire card for my PC when I had one for 11 dollars. ;) patseguin > No where did I say you offended me. I find it humorous. I didn't realize it was such a hard task. Maybe my assumptions on the intelligence level of the average member here is a little over-optimistic. Don't even look at the sub-forums, it's a main forum right on the front page, "Discussing Apple Hardware" or "Portable Devices." And just a free tip for ya, most people in the "Discussing Apple Hardware" section are Mac users. I don't know why, it just some how worked out that way. Strange, eh?

patseguin Global Moderator Posted March 25, 2004 Author Global Moderator Share Posted March 25, 2004 Fusion, I was only kidding. I find it sort of humerous when people make posts complaining about where a post is made. If anyone should mind, I would think it would be the mods and they could have moved this topic to the proper forum by now.
Liquid
I've got a firewire port on my audigy and my motherboard, so which should I use with an iPod? MOBO, its alot faster, max speed with audigy is the PCI speed, 133 while the mobo can reach a full 480MB/s
patseguin Global Moderator Posted March 25, 2004 Author Global Moderator Share Posted March 25, 2004 Well, We found out that his FW port on his laptop is NOT powered. Prolly because it's a laptop? Anyhow, he bought a 15GB iPod and loves it. Just have to make sure it is charged while syncing. My 20GB 3G will be on eBay the second the purported 4G (color screen) ones come out. :)
