First off... I am still a noob, too! :p

Second, what are you trying to install? aMSN? Mandrake comes with GAIM, I think. That is capable of talking on MSN Messenger.... If gaim works well for you, I would jsut stick with it.

anyways, I came across the smae problem when I was instlalling Firefox, so can you/someone teach me how to set myself as a administrator .. so I can install aything anywhere :)

EDIT : I tried looking for gAIM under "Start Menu" > Internet > Chat and it aonly said XChat and under Instant Messenging it only said kopete so I dont think Mandrake 10.0 comes with gAIM .. I maybe wrong

Before you try to install it, you should become root, by typing "su" in the shell (without the quotations). It will prompt you for root password and then you shouldn't get any more errors about write access.

Edit: Root is the equivalent of an administrator in the Windoze world :D

You don't have a root password? You should've definetly been prompted to create one while installing Mandrake. It even goes as far as to make sure what you choose for a root password is not simple (in that it's not short, and is a combination of letters and numbers).

And if you press enter without typing in a root password it takes you back to just being a regular 'ol user, hence the problem still occurs.

Edit: Just saw your edit, no prob (Y)
