treadingwater
Linux seems to do everything right. They also seem to dabble in a lot of different utilities. My question is if anybody knows of any home recording software produced for Linux? Thanks.. TW.
[ucw]prophet
I'd personally suggest going to Sourceforge.net and doing a search to see what you can bring up. I personally like Audacity. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
MR_Candyman
Audacity's the only decent one IMHO so far... I'd love to see Reason and Sound Forge (not to mention Pro-tolls, Cubase, Acid, Wavelab, etc.) go to Linux, but they won't for a while. I DID however find an 8 channel audio panner on source forge that works VERY well. It outputs the sound though, but there's still many ways to deal with that ;)
Sav
Another 1 for Audacity here

treadingwater
A quick question from the unitiated: Is Audacity free?.. On the way there now.. Thx. TW. PS. Glad to see a few other musicians here!! Now if I was just as good at working on PC's..., LOL.
treadingwater
Whoa.. I'm there now. At 2.7 MB, I think I'm liking what I'm seeing. No reason any sound recording software has to be a resource hog. And yet, from the description, it seems to do everything I need. I'm just guessing here, but I figure that the small amount of space used by this utility may be an early indication that it should be pretty user friendly to the beginner as well... Awesome. Thanks guys. TW.
treadingwater
I'm looking at it and I'm happy. Very awesome. Couldn't be happier. Thanks again.

treadingwater
Lah, lah... Listnin' ta m'self right now ... God it's great that it turns your tracks into a WAV files just like that. Sounds great and all I'm using is one of thos Sh*tty little chat microphones. Woo Hoo! I've been writing music for 4 years and this is the first time I've ever had anything to record any of it on. To think it's been sitting right under my nose all along..! Hey, I'm just going to throw this question out there in case anybody feels like answering: Anybody using this utility had the chance to find anything decent to write drum and/or piano tracks on? Just wondering. TW.
mcnelson
Computer music had a special edition at xmas which featured an article devoted to making music with Linux. Gimme a sec and I'll dig it out. Here you go I'm sure those kind folks at CM won't mind. Edited March 28, 2004 by mcnelson
