RedHat 9 + A7V600

Recommended Posts

Hey there...

I'm back into experimenting with Linux, but I can't seem to get my audio working. There's no drivers on the asus site, so I really have no idea what to do.

I'm going to try and compile a new source that it on the APC Mag CD. I'm currently using the default source for RedHat 9 (shrike), which is 2.4.20-8

HELP ME PLEASE

Sorry that no one got to your thread earlier... But, as for me, I was sleepin!

Your sound doesn't work in RedHat 9? What sound system are you using? Also, did you try a new Knoppix LiveCD and see if it has any sound for you? If so, then you know that you can get sound, and you can see how Knoppix configed your sound, and use the same setup in RedHat.

Also, if you want a RedHat-type system, I would recommend FedoraCore 1 over RH9 for home use.

yeah.. thanks for that. I already knew that Linux would use my sound, since it worked in Lindows. I'm just using the onboard sound that is on the mobo (Asus A7V600).

It doesn't matter now, anyway. I'm back on XP.

my bet is that it was working, but it was muted. Your motherboard uses AC97 audio, which is the most supported interface in history. I'm sure it was installed and working fine, just the output or input was muted in the alsa mixer

I googled your problem aswell and every one that said what wa sindeed wrong was that it was muted...

Maybe you did have an install problem though. You could install a newer version of alsa, you could re-compile your kernel making sure that AC97 support is included. Both of those would fix your problem

yeah... I've just given up on Linux again. It's a good OS, but I'm at a time when I require everything to work the way I'm used to. I'll go to it again this holidays.

ya, I can understand the needing things to work...I remember my pcmcia slots wouldn't work because they'd conflict with the ide-scsi converter the dvd-rom has. Fortunately I found a modified kernel for red hat that did the trick (as I used red hat back then)

ok... So I'm back on RedHat 9...

I've looked everywhere, about muting the sound and what not. I've tried everything that I can think of... but this is the information that I could find while browsing through things:

Vendor: Via Technologies

Model: VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller

Module: VIA82cxxx_audio

SOMEBODY HELP ME

Try a different, more upto date version of nix. I have the Via KT600 Chipset (same as yours i think) on my Abit KV7. Only problems i have (pre 2.6.x kernel) is that my Sata Hard drive isnt supported.

Try mandrake 10, or as the people here have said try knoppix, and im willing to bet that will solve your problem

sound will work in rh9 with his hardware, no need to use another distro to fix this issue.

i have a question for you though shrike, what are you trying to play to test your sound?
