techquilla
how do you open, read or write to a linux partition in windows..? does it require a 3rd party software or can windows do it alone..? thanks in advanced...
configure Veteran Posted March 28, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 28, 2004 Windows can't do that by itself. Look for a third-party software that will let you access/write the ext3 file-system.

lexor
wouldn't samba do the trick? setup samba server on linux (can be difficult, I actually battle with it myself now) then just map drive in explorer.
markwolfe Veteran Posted March 28, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 28, 2004 wouldn't samba do the trick? setup samba server on linux (can be difficult, I actually battle with it myself now) then just map drive in explorer. I think that they are asking about doing it on the same (dual-boot) PC. Linux can read/write to FAT, and read NTFS (write with some newer tricks that I don't recommend where data integrity is critical). But Microsoft is bent on refusing to interoperate with other OSes (or even with open standards).

MR_Candyman
you can get ext2fs working with it...
kongit
I wouldn't that as it would have a very high chance of borking it. Your best bet for any linux filesystem is to use a fat partition to transfer stuff between windows and linux. Unless you are going to access something like music, pictures, or a documents, there really isn't a reason to access stuff in windows. If you have to fix something use knopix. After a while you start finding ways to do what you used to jump into windows to do and you gradually stop using windows altogether :D
