michael.b
Okay, this might be a stupid question, but I look forward to any insight anyone might be able to provide. We are all familiar with iTunes and rival music services available for both Windows and Mac platforms. I think I remember hearing this was a feature to come to iTunes, but now wonder if maybe it was a rumored feature, etc? But, is subscription streaming going to be available through iTunes anytime in the near future? Example: Listening to as many songs as you like without burning/downloading privileges for around $9.99/mo. The reason I ask is that even though the 30 second previews are appreciated, sometimes there is a part of a song that hooks you outside of that little timeframe. Thanks. Redestium
I don't think so since Apple said sub services are bad, and on another note it doesn't sell iPods (the real purpose of the store).
danbalsh
Yeah you'll never see a Subscription service from Apple, it was one of there key launching slogans 'You rent an apartment, you don't rent music!'

michael.b
Good deal, good deal. Thanks for the information. My friend Kevin asked. He is impressed with Rhapsody and wanted to know if it were to be intergrated into the iTunes interface. Must have been rumors from what I heard as both of your quotes just simply bashed that one down to the floor. I too would have liked to see a subscription service... but it's true... you do rent apartments, not music... right? ;) And on a more economical stance, wouldn't that provide less income? So, agreed, it might not be the best stance to be taken. Viva iTMS. P.S. Do any of you know any hard-core PC people who swear by PCs only, etc... but yet use the iTunes application? Talk about GREATNESS. I just laugh so hard, because I know two die-hard people that would never dare consider anything outside of Windows, yet use the iTunes application. I never brought it up... but I just laugh uncontrolably at the fact that they're using the application to handle all their music and not only for a Pepsi bottle top they might have redeemed. :)

Timan Veteran Posted March 28, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 28, 2004 I think renting music is a good idea why? because after a few listens to a song it gets old, rather have 10$ say a month goto as many songs rather than 10 songs i'm stuck with. hope that makes sense. michael.b
Personally, I don't like the idea of "renting" my music... I like owning my music too. Nothing worse than not having your music at hand right. I remember all the neigh-sayers when I purchased the first generation iPod... Everyone, probably out of jealousy was all like, "Why would you need so much music on you at one time?" Why not? "Oh, how much did Mommy and Daddy pay for that one?" Try my first paycheck. And it's funny... cause all the ones who talked are the ones who own them now. I guess, as for the "renting" of the music... that would be kind of an appeal for the people who like to illegally download music. At least that is how I look at it... because they're able to get as much as they can for the least amount of money. I think... anyhow. I primarily listen through my iPod as I have roomates that I need to be attentive of and even when I am at home, I can't always be blaring the 5.1 surround. So a subscription service would almost be null for me, not to mention I doubt it does any good on a 5.1 surround system.

I personally prefer to own the CD just incase the song pops into my head and I miss it. I have a 400 song playlist on winamp but I do change up my music :)

aristotle-dude
One of the things you cannot do with rented music is use them in your presentations/derived works. Now I'm not talking about re-releasing a song but rather your home movies or dvds etc...
