Mandrake Upgrade!

Recommended Posts

Is it any need for an upgrade, what is the big difference here?

I have only seen problems with Mandrake 10 since it was released, and these problems was wery much from people that had used Mandrake 9.2 before they installe Mandrake 10!

I don`t now what to do?

One more thing, if i install Linux mandrake 10 on my home computer can i still choose between the Windows versions and Linux? (i got Win 98 and Win xp installed from before)!

I hope someone can answer this.

Well, does Mandrake 10 got drivers for Hercules 8500(Ati based graphic card), or must i install it manually through the konsole?

I also got a Hercules surround card, that i don`t now if Mandrake support!

On clue is that i also got a integrated sound card on the same computer as i has the surround card(will this be a problem, or is sufficient to disable this in the bios?).

Thanx in advance!

wait until the actual release and maybe then some. The version that you could download right now has more bugs and probably should only be used if you intend to report bugs for mandrake (which is a very good thing to do if you have the patience and wont be using mandrake for anything of importance)

additionally you most likely can use the ati drivers as the hercules is just an ati card vendored by a third party. I am pretty sure that the drivers for radeon that come with the standard xfree-drm, which most major distros include, will work correctly with your card, however they might not work as well as you would expect because the standard radeon driver supports several different radeon chips and is probably not optimized for the 8500. However ati offers linux drivers for the 8500 here

If you can get this driver to work correctly your video card should perform very well.

ALSA (the advanced linux sound archeticture....it sounds better than oss, but I am betting that whatever distro you are using is using oss) supports three different hercules sound cards: Game Fortissimo II, Game Muse XL, and Game Theater XP.

OSS only supports Game Theater XP as far as I can tell.

However with both ALSA and OSS your card might work with a generic driver, but I don't know what type of card you have.

Lastly all of this was found in 5 minutes using google.

what is its nic, and does it have multiple ones?

You might have the wrong one setup if you have two, but if you have one your pci might not be loading correctly. Additionally what is the output from ifconfig and probably more importantly lspci

I have 2 on board nics. They are seen, but just will NOT work.

what is /sbin/ifconfig showing ? and do you have a firewall enabled, i know redhat has some firewall setup when you install it to make things more 'secure' but it could be something simple like that

it could be that the firewall is blocking it, or maybe it configured itself for the other nic, or maybe the module being loaded is the wrong one. I thinkt that the nics on that board are different and require different drivers.

if ifconfig shows a working connection in addition to lo then it is either your firewall isn't allowing outgoing or you might have misconfigured the connection settings. Networking in linux is usually simple compared to windows in my opinion. However several distros have made it harder than it should be by adding options that aren't very useful to normal users but are very useful for server like situations.

Yes its always been simple for me, but this time around its been a pain. I am connected to a Wireless Router so mabey that is the hang up i dont know. Its the MS Base Station. I am hard wired though, not using a wireless connection that is set up for the rest of my house.

I Think i will wait for the next rekease, i will try to install the driver Kongit presented to me and see if it work in Mandrake 9,2.

Do u guys now how to use my Usb - inputs in Linux, i can`t make them work in Linux!

When i use the same Usb-ports in Windows they could not be better, is it because i have to install the Digital-camera manually first and then connect the camera or something.
