GenesisNZ
Hey all :) This my very first Linux install and I'm in need of help here, I'm huge n00b to the Linux scene and decided to download RedHat 9 to give me a good place to start. When trying to install it on my 3rd Machine (espically brought for my new learning experience :p) it booted into CD1 and then when going into install it in either Graphic Mode or in Text Mode it comes up with: Kernel Panic: Attempting to kill init or something along those lines. Please help! Cheers Gen BTW: System Specs are unknown due to the PC being given to me randomly from a friend, who has moved overseas, atm I can determine its a Celeron 433Mhz with 512MB SDRAM thats about it. CaKeY
Might be a bad iso. Tough to say.

kemical
find out your system specs first, or perhaps take out hardware and boot the machine todetermine if its a hardware problem
GenesisNZ
Like to note that it work's perfectly in Windows, so I doubt its a hardware fault.
kongit
windows often can load with bad hardware and get away with it because of the way it does drivers. Addtionally linux doesn't support everything that windows does.

GenesisNZ
Oh well, still can't get it working, tried Debian and RedHat 9. Tried removing everything in the PC so only the mouse, keyboard and VGA card were active. Can't be bothered anymore, going into install Windows 2k Pro much easier and painfree :D
kongit
have you tried knoppix? If knoppix won't work then... but at least try the knoppix. If it works then you can figure out what you need to do to get other things to work. It might something really simple/
kjordan2001
Yep, I was about to recommend trying Knoppix too.
GenesisNZ
I've just tried swaping RAM Sticks over and that seemed to work :o! Maybe it dosen't like PC100 RAM Sticks? Anyway, thank you all for the help :D
kongit
Nope your sticks might not be very good. And linux is usually more sensitive to hardware than windows. And that is a good thing for your hardware. But it is easier to bork your hardware in linux because the safety controls present in xp and the 2000s don't allaw you to do as much unless you know what you are doing. However in linux you could just mistype something as root and then accidently fry some peice of hardware. Although that rarely happens. Most mistypes in root only mess up the filesystem if anything.
