jiggling_john
hi, first i'm fairly new to linux, so be nice to me! I've been trying linux now and again for some time, and recently was going to make the switch completely. The only problem i faced was that i couldn't get my printer working... its a lexmark z601 (if anyone can help me ;)), i checked out a few sites and found that my only option was to write my own driver..! Not the thing a newcomer is going to do! I found it quite astounding that an OS as established as linux has such a major show stopping disability, surely it cannot be all that difficult to get printer drivers sorted?? (I may be showing my naivety here..) Any suggestions on what i can do? (apart from buy a new printer!)
nocture
what distro are you using? try looking for "cups" if it is not already installed
MR_Candyman
there are drivers for CUPS, but I cannot get them working for me either...I have the z605 (uses the same driver in windows and linux)
CaKeY
I dont see 601 on the lexmark site. There are linux drivers available for the Z604 and Z605.
CaKeY
Actually the 605 ones should work... Products: Lexmark Z601, Lexmark Z602, Lexmark Z604, Lexmark Z605, Lexmark Z615
jiggling_john
the 605 driver works for the 601 :) it's fairly new too... how can i install this (i'm used to relying on rpms) on suse 9.2 or mandrake 10 (i'm trying them both...!) you guys reply damn quick..! CaKeY
Download it, extract it and check out the included readme file. Should be just a matter of running the sh script.
kongit
be warned that lexmark doesn't have great support for linux and they will only work easily with a rpm based distro like redhat, fedora, mandrake, and suse. It is possible to get it to work on other distros but much more difficult if you are using the drivers off the lexmark site.
MulletRobZ
Slackware only requires a TGZ file if there is one available and to install it, it's simply "installpkg (PACKAGE_NAME).tgz".
kongit
lexmark doesn't use tgz as far as I know.
MR_Candyman
nope, .rpm only...which is why I'm having such a tough time with it and slackware...I don't need to print often, but it's still annoying

cpugeniusmv
on my slackware box, i found a utility called rpm2tgz perhaps try that :)
kongit
won't work with lexmark as they are inside a bash-gzip monster thingy. Also I opened up the monster and extracted everything then in slackware and never had any success. I also prefer alien for conversion between package formats.
