Gnome 2.6 has been released.

I'm wondering if I should make the switch from KDE 3.2.1. I really like what they've done with KDE, but this new Gnome looks equally impressive. The problem is, I use Gentoo and my use flags are set to -gtk and -gnome, so for full functionality, I'd need to recompile a bunch of stuff.

I won't download it so I can be sure not to mess up my computer ever again! It's just that I reinstalled different Linux distros like eight or nine times over the last month or two and I simply had enough of this!

Can you believe it :s they have added "spatial" browsing (aka, open every damn folder in a damn new window) and made it the default

In windows this is the first thing I always disable (well XP already has it disabled and I believe 2000 too).

Which idiot decided to default it? It is so annoying.

yea you can change that

in gconf

i know its kinda nanoying

but they got the whole bottom-left-corner- navigation thingi which kindaa softens the blow but

they should somehow have the navigation view combined with their new spatial view..

like have the tree view inside those new smaller compact, similar windows that open in spacial.. with the old style open inside the current window method.

ahh

who konws what will happen in 2.8 :)

have you been able to get your cairo working schmoove?

No, I'm a Linux newbie :)

One step at a time, lol. Installing Gnome has been enough for today ;)

Seen the Cairo screenshots though, looks very delicious :woot:

Use a Debian-based distro then. If something misbehaves then do a "apt-get remove packagename" followed by a "apt-get install packagename". It will handle the dependencies for you. Knoppix 3.4 should hit the mirrors in a few days if not already.

The should almost never be a need to completely reinstall Debian (barring a major disk incident).

It wasn't just decided on. It was researched. There is a science of how people interact with their comps. Read about the decision on the Ars Technica overview of 2.6. If you would use it for more than 5 minutes, you would realize that it is whole lot more intuitive and faster. If you looked into it, you would realize that you can double middle-click to close the parent window of a folder when it has been opened.

Also, try to keep an open mind. There are some people, including me, who actually like the spatial metaphor. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean the developer, who works real hard to bring you free, quality software, is an "idiot". That is so disrespectful.

Testing different Linux distributions all at once. First, I went from Slackware 9.0 to 9.1, but then I had some problems using the built-in printer modules. I reinstalled this version once or twice because I was testing some updates (including the kernel) and it caused my system to jam. So I thought I'd give Fedora 2 Test 1 a try and it was all right except that the printer failed after installing TrueType fonts. I think I installed Fedora twice to make sure of this fact. Then I went back to Mandrake 9.0 until 10.0 was out. So I eventually put 10.0 on and I was very unimpressed with the problems I had. And a couple of weeks ago, I went back to Slackware 9.1, this time remembering to install the printer drivers via source and not the ones included, and it was fine. Now that everything works decently, I better park it with the testing and the upgrading!

Relax a bit ok..... jeez.

I know what it is and I've worked more then 5 minutes with it. I've been dealing with this since Windows 95 and I tried it long enough in Gnome 2.6 to say that I hate it. Research or not, there is a reason why Microsoft decided to drop it and why MacOSX works different too. It is because it clutters the desktop and you loose sight of what is where.... at least that is my experience. That you have tons of shortcuts, mouse actions or whatever to manage it doesn't make it much better. It still feels like crap for me.

Also I find it kind of stupid how they are trying to re-invent the wheel and making it a new breakthrough feature.... while other OS-es don't use it and proved it to be less usefull then other methods.

This is just my personal opinion, if you like the way it works... well good for you. I think it blows.
