nVIDIA Drivers on Fedora

Recommended Posts

I downloaded the latest driver installation package from nVIDIA, but I have NO idea how the hell to get out of X to install them. I have a Geforce 4 mx 440 se, fedora core 1.

Press control-alt-f2 to get to a command prompt and login as root. Then use telinit 3 to shut down x and all programs running and switch to run level three (text only). You can then install the drivers.

Edit: forgot to say, use telinit 5 to switch back to gui mode, but remember that the root console may still be logged in on control-alt-f2, so switch to it, logout, then press control alt f7 to switch back to x.

You will have to specify the full path in FC on telinit.

Use /sbin/telinit 3 to switch to runlevel 3, which will terminate X for you.

Once installed, use /sbin/telinit 5 to switch back to your normal runlevel 5. :)

(and please don't forget to get back to CTRL+ALT+F2 and exit your root login...) ;)

Or when GRUB comes up, I think you press "a", then "4", then Enter. That will get you to text mode (Run Level 4) because Run Level 3 tyakes you through this crappy wizard. But I have tried installing the NVidia drivers in Fedora and I didn't encounter any problems. Hope this helps. :)
