bucko
Hi I have a bit of experience in Mandrake Linux and some on Gentoox (an xbox port). I have just installed XP Pro on my 27.9 GB drive (/dev/hda). Now I'm downloading ftp://www.mirror.ac.uk/sites/ftp.fi.debia...86-binary-1.iso Is this the correct Debian ISO to install? Do I really need all 7 ISO images? I'm on a broadband connection. Looking around the debian site the manual is difficult to understand, I was wondering if any of you know a really newb install guide? I would like to install debian on my second hard drive, 10.00GB (/dev/hdb)., I figure the installer isn't graphical? Also things like setting up partitions & lilo look difficult, could you please advice. All my network is DHCP. Anything else you need to know please advice. Specs... Pentium 2 400Mhz Geforce 2MX 400 w/64MB ram 256MB SDRam 100Mhz 27.9GB Hard Drive (XP Pro) 10GB Hard Drive (for Debian) Thanks.
kemical
i'd figured you would only need one cd if you were to do a netinstall type deal with debian

bucko
I just need to know if I'm downloading the right thing, theres was two download directorys were I looked. <goes and reads that really complicated guide with really complicated examples. cpugeniusmv
when i installed it, it only asked for CDs 1 and 2. I had all 7 CDs and i told it that if it needed them, then i could pop them in. there is a stage in installation where you can add installation sources (your CD). i'd grab CDs 1 and 2, and then add an ftp source just in case. bucko
Cool, so Ill just download the 2nd CD now. Hey can you advice me on a good paritition setup, I mentioned my specs, namely a 10GB drive and 256MB ram. Thanks if you can help out. Also during install would the LILO setup be easier, or is it a hard task. Do you recomend I setup to a boot floppy.
Fred Derf Veteran Posted April 3, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 3, 2004 supposedly debian is very hard to install. have fun :D If he wants Debian and he wants easy then he should get Knoppix. Knoppix comes with a HD install script and once you do that, you've got Debian. Knoppix fits a heck of a lot more into their 700MB ISO then most other distros. It's a full distro. Once you install it, it is 99.9% the same as Debian.
MR_Candyman
ya, knoppix is great and runs great from hard drive... only difference really is it's not optimized for your system in any way.

Fred Derf Veteran Posted April 3, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 3, 2004 ya, knoppix is great and runs great from hard drive...only difference really is it's not optimized for your system in any way. So, compile your own kernel then. Knoppix is still the easiest way to get ot Debian.
bucko
Look, I don't want to use Knoppix ok. I have used Linux Mandrake which is designed for newbs, I'm still a newb but I want to go to the upper level ok. I have used Xebian on my xbox as well as Gentoox so I have some experience in Linux such as compiling apps from source code and setting up servers like apache and FTP. Thanks Saverize for the link, and btw PHLAK is much better than Knoppix. I just need someone one advicing me on the parition layout on my 10GB drive. Thanks if you can help. bucko
Saverize that guide is SIMPLEY the BEST. It was just WHAT i was looking for! Just read it through and I'm now clear on how to partition my 10GB drive with debians tools. The guide on the debian site was way to complicated. Thanks once again saverize, going to print this guide of tomorrow and install it. So you only need the one disk huh, great. Well one quick mention I have a USB Logitech mouse thats cordless and optical (radio). It's worked in Linux Mandrake and the guide does give some helpful hints if you do have a USB mouse though he doesn't have one, do you think I will come accross any problems using a weel usb mouse. Cheers Saverize, it's just was I was looking for that guide, very clear and understadning.

kongit
your shouldn't have any probs with the mouse. the wireless isn't dependent on the driver afaik. and the wheel is fully supported in the x that you will be getting with debian. Why you choose debian I don't know, but I have heard good things about it. If knoppix will work with your hardware (including mouse) than debian will too. Setting it up might be hard, but you can always look at the configuration in knoppix. Knoppix might be an easy way to use debian, but it isn't the "way" to install debian. More of a cheat method in my mind. If you can install debian the right way you should know once you get it installed how to use debian. By installing knoppix you might get a working debian install but then you are stuck learning how to use it (upgrade, add packages, etc).
Ultra Frosty
I'm running Debian 3 full time, I have had some experience with Red Hat 9, but I like Debian better. Installing Debian wasn't very hard, but if your new to linux, I think you will have some trouble. I think Debian 3rc2 comes with LILO only, thats what I'm using. In the installer, it prompts you asking if you want to install it, its not as pretty as Grub but it gets the job done.

bucko
Hey just got around to installing it, it all installed fine though I think I messed up on my network configuration. Either I missed the step by accident (although I did enter a hostname) or it didn't detect my "SIS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter" which gets it's IP and other information from DHCP. I noticed it wasn't working because every mirror I tried when configuring my system for apt-get would fail. So 1, how do I configure my network card and 2, how do I get that base config menu backup. Cheers if you can help. I'd rather use debian than knoppix, don't want to mess around with cd distros, I want the full blown thing in a pro way :). Lilo detected Windows NT just fine btw (well it's XP Pro), also at install it it formatted the partitions as Ext2. I know Ext3 is the king but is it ok to use Ext 2. Cheers, bucko. cpugeniusmv
well, i guess that's unique to knoppix...i thought it might be in debian... i'll keep looking. if i don't find any tools, i'll post the hard way ;)
