BitTorent

Recommended Posts

Bittorrent is a P2P downloading system. Essentially, you download not from a single server, but from everyone else downloading. To do so, you obtain a .torrent file which lists the central server for that download. From there you ask the central server for a list of clients to download from and request the download from them. The advantages here are that overall bandwidth is increased because you are downloading from many sources instead of one and some of your upstream bandwidth is used to help increase the amount of bandwidth in the total pool. It's being implemented for a variety of games, such as Half Life 2 and World of Warcraft which are sure to be popular and require a lot of bandwidth. They can offset costs by puting some of that burden back on the users.
