Share Printers over Mac and PC Platform

Recommended Posts

hmm i think i'd better create a separate thread :)

but anywho, I need to share two printers over a mac (with mac os x server 10.3.3 installed) and pc network (windows server 2003 enterprise server installed)

i know in mac os x 10.3, you just basically need to go into system preference and choose sharing > printer sharing. but in mac os x server 10.3, there's no such selection in sharing. i don't know how i can get this to work :/

any suggestions?

im not a mac user but a print server would be a good idea cause that way you wont need a computer to be on and it can be hooked up to your router. they are a little expenisve though.

i have mac os x server installed on the mac

and i believe printer sharing is built-in in panther (in the client version, you can simply go to sharing system preference and there's a printer sharing selection but not in the server version tho. so what im trying to do is to figure out how to get it work in server version)

i also tried using workgroup manager to assign printer to windows but i cannot save the settings

hmmm intresting thread.

Is there no program in the Applications folder for Printers, that might have an option somewhere??? this is just a shot in the dark as I've never user X Server.

You may want to try asking on the Apple Discussion Board - > http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?f50...Njwt.0@.ee6ba34

I found this quote, apprently OS X Server only supports Postscript printer sharing

Apparently, Mac OS 10.3 Server only supports Ethernet/USB Postscript printers

EDIT: You could also try just using the CUPS Printer Sharing, search MacOSXHints.com they have loads of this topic (Y)

I tried this for literally 3 days straight about 4 months ago with my HP printer. Even had HP tech support call me back about 5 times.

I got my Windows XP comp to see the printer on the Mac right away, but it would never print to it.

From my troubleshooting, and with the help of the head IT guy from the eastern hemisphere for HP (that was his title he gave to me i am not making it up LOL), it was determined that because the drivers were different for both operating systems, this was causing the non-printing issue.

The only way it might work, and I stress might because it is still not proven, is if the printer has the same exact drivers for each OS. which considering how many vendors scrambled to make new drivers for OS X when it came out, never-mind Panther, that is a longshot indeed.

The best, and I do think only way, to have a printer shared, is to make it a network printer.

Hope this helped. (Y)

i had this problem a while ago, i spent hours trying to get it to work on Mac OS X 10.3.3 not server edition

If the printer is on the PC, there is no trouble, but it had to be on the mac. So I tried all that CUPS crud but to no avail.

Then I went around looking for 3rd party apps. DAVE 4.1 i think it was called and it worked great! They have a free demo you can get from their website

Looks like they are up to version 5!

Good luck and I hope this helps, need any more info just send a PM

peace out
