Resizing ext3 partitions

Recommended Posts

I finally got Fedora Core 1 running on my IBM Thinkpad 570. Supprisingly Linux runs like a dream on it, its very supprising considering that it is a P2 366Mhz, 192MB RAM with 2.5MB Video.

Anyways, I made my "/" partition too smal, (about 3GB in size) so unfortunatley I've run out of space.

I shrank my Win2K NTFS partition which freed up another 5GB. I then downloaded QTParEd (Linux partition manager) only to find that it cant resize ext3 partitions. So what I did was create another 5GB ext3 partition, but now I have the problem that I cant use this partition to store programs, etc, because it likes to store all RPMS and whatever on my root partition.

So is there any way I can:

a) Delete the new ext3 partition and resize my root partition to take up all free space on the disk

OR

b) Make it so that my system takes advantage of the space on my new 5GB ext3 partition (eg. Uses it for temp space when performing operations like compiling, installing programs, rpms, etc)

Thanks in advance for any help

For reference here is my current hard drive layout:

Total drive size: 20GB

hda1 swap 500MB

hda3 /home ext3 1.51GB

hda2 extended partition

hda5 /mnt/Windows ntfs 9.28GB

hda6 ext3 4.43GB ** THE NEW ext3 PARTITION **

hda7 / ext3 2.95GB

you can resize ext3 with Acronis Partition Expert (probably with Powerquest Partition Magic too.)

but make sure after you resize it that you boot from a bootdisk (such as knoppix), mount your boot partition, chroot to it, and lilo (assuming you're using lilo, i can't remember if FC1 does or not...)
