Fred Derf Veteran Posted April 5, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 5, 2004 i was just thinking dose any one know who made linux and what year it was ? Linux was written by Linus Torvalds in the early nineties at the University of Helsinki, Finland. It was authored as a clone of the UNIX kernel to demonstrate his programming skills and understanding of concepts. Torvalds published his work on the Internet and refined it using feedback from others. So much interest was generated that working groups took up the task of writing the components or 'drivers' needed for each of the hardware devices that could be used on a system. The Linux kernel was released to the general public in 1992. Torvalds maintains control over the 'kernel' or core program but is quite open to suggestions regarding refinement. Any Linux distribution package will also contain many UNIX lookalike utilities and several shell programs from the GNU Project. Linux is the heart and GNU is the body of an 'open' system of the 'soldier' in the Internet army. http://home.cogeco.ca/~ve3ll/linuxhis.htm?reload_coolmenus
