Getting an Apple powerbook 1.25gig

Recommended Posts

I need help configuring my Apple Powerbook G4 1.25gig. I already know if I am getting 1gig ram then I will have to sacrifice other things. Please post your best configs for the laptop and I'll see which is the best for me. I intend on using Alias' Maya 3D on it so keep that 3D application in mind. Thank you for your time. Oh and no comments about getting a 17" its out of the question. I couldnt afford to add 1gig ram to the 17" my budget is just about $2800.

K :D

It's called "after-market" ram. It's like 1/2 the price.

also, don't wanna do this to you poor soul, but the mac sites have been flooded with a month relating to rumours and threads about new powerbooks (looks like g5's too). Haha, now you are in the waiting game too :D muhahahhaha!

Are you going to get the super drive or not? If you order it from apple.com you can get the 1.25 with just a combo drive instead of the superdrive. Maybe just go for the 2 sticks of 256 (cheapest avalable ram option) and then sell one of them on e-bay and get a 512...thats what I might do...remember though that OSX is better with more RAM (even more so than windows) so maybe pay the extra $90 for the sigle stick of 512 and then get another one or maybe even a 1gig stick...just dont get them from apple.

There should be Mobile Radeon 9700s in the next powerbook line up which...heh...will come out sometime before the end of this century hopefully...

17inch is too big and if you're doing maya stuff you are gonna want the better video card and screen size so the 12inch is out of the question...

$2800 is alot of money...I wish I had that much to spend on a laptop...actually no, I'm gonna spend $1600 on a 12inch and thats just enough for me

If you are up to it i'd say just order it with the smallest (aka cheapest) harddrive possible and then get a 2.5inch 7200RPM ata100 8mb cache harddrive and swap them out.

Definetly go for airport extreme.

Applecare is a must have.

You can swap the powerbook hdd with a 7200rpm 8mb one? Wow, that makes them much more attractive than I previously thought. I agree about the one stick of 512 from apple and the other stick from ebay. That's what I would do.

edit: I checked newegg. I don't see a 7200 rpm notebook hdd. Don't know if you meant notebook hdd or what, heh.

Wow I finally came back and all of these posts are up. Well I got swayed by my car and adding new things to it but I want my power book so bad. Its annoying to hear the the G5powerbooks may be around the corner. I want to wait but Ive waited so long to get a power book. maybe I should just buy the darn G5 tower instead and save up for the 23inch LCD. I use the LCD at school and its a must have for Maya and anything else. Movies on the 23inch are amazing. Better then my 17" at home watching movies is okay but 23inchs of love is a must. Hmmm any info on the G5powerbook rumors?

G5 PowerBooks are not around the corner, I would not expect them until August or later.

It's very likely that the next PowerBook update is going to be another G4.
