Ridgeburner
Alright, this is my first solid true venture into the world of Linux, and I *only* picked Lindows, because it was out of the ...ahem...*box* already configured and in 100% working order for all my hardware, something other linux distros couldnt seem to do without some tweaking on my part. So don't flame! :) Anyway, my question is, is it possible that Lindows was somehow made to disable the ability to install programs conventionally (through the console)? It comes with Click N Run which is some subscription service so you can download and install programs very easily, but I recently downloaded The Gimp, and im following the install file and it says to run "make" so i went into console, went to the dir with all the files and typed "make" and i got a bash: unknown command , so then i tried "make install" and got bash: unknown command ....how is this possible? am i forgetting to do something? Im signed in as root, so it cant be a permissions thing, and the "unknown command" makes me think that they somehow disabled the ability to conventionally install programs? is this possible" or am i doing something wrong? possibly needed info: dual booting with XP and Lindows 4.5.
Veiva
I think you need to type ./make. I don't know if it is only for some programs though... But have you checked the directory for a file called make? It should (usually) be one level higher than the main source folder.
Ridgeburner
Well after looking around all night and on the forums, it seems that they built Lindows OS completely around this Click N' Run BS which is supposed to make it easier for people to download/install/and run things, but it's subscription based and i aint payin. I read a few forum post on the lindows site about downloading synaptic and installing it with apt-get and all this other crap, and of course you cant INSTALL something when you dont have pkgconfig it seems, and i cant INSTALL pkgconfig because i dont HAVE pkgconfig and arghhhh *tears hair out* I just wish that a *normal* linux distro would run so flawlessly. Redhat, Mandrake, Knoppix (Debian) and like 2 others i've tried, always miss hardware. My sound/video might work, but then not my NIC card. Or visa versa, Lindows was the only one to pull off all 3 of them, and did a damn nice job.
ecstasis
I ran Lindows for a few days awhile back to see its support for my laptop (somewhat decent) and I noticed that the reason you cannot run the make command is that non of the developer tools are installed (make, gcc). You can try going to the developer section of the CNR and grab them all but that might be more hassle than its worth. I seem to recall seeing a developer edition of Lindows that had these tools/programs installed out of the box, that might be something you want to look into. Ridgeburner
Hmm, very true I did see that when I was looking, the dev edition...and yeah CNR like takes over EVERYTHING it sucks, and im not gonna pay to download just that, i think you can get a free membership and junk, but, that's more hassle than its worth. Thanks i'll look into it :)
CaKeY
I just wish that a *normal* linux distro would run so flawlessly. The new Kernel 2.6.x has much better hardware support and most major distros havent shipped it yet. Keep an eye on DistroWatch.
randomnut
I think you need to download the Developers Version, that includes all the tools you need to compile stuff.
Ridgeburner
Cant seem to find the developer's edition of Lindows, damn.. and the new Knoppix 3.4 CT kernel still didn't find my ethernet card, I obtained it last week or so and it was great, 'cept for my NIC card. :(
kongit
you need a certain program (I forgot which) in order to run "make." as for your nic, what is it?
randomnut
http://www.lindows.com/lindows_storefront.php?own=no Developers edition is on there :) However, there are loads of free coupon codes to download them for free going around :)
Ridgeburner
kongit: I have the Nforce2 Network controller, the MCP onboard one. RandomUT: Thanks, I see now :) But I wonder where to find these coupons...
markwolfe Veteran Posted April 9, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 9, 2004 Couple of thoughts here.... First, I have a legal .iso of Lindows 4.5 Developer's Edition. I used it on my son's PC once, and have since switched his PC to Fedora Core. I keep the Lindows CD because it *does* do a pretty good job for noobs (better than Knoppix in some departments). I don't mind (too much) transferring it to you (which would oblige me to no longer have access to or use it any longer). But, if you need it, I will give it up for you. I am starting to become a "distro pig" and at least download and try any distro that I can as of late... Second, and maybe more relevant, perhaps you can get or copy how Lindows configed your system, and use it on a Fedora/Mandrake/SuSe/Debian/whatever type of distro? Seems that you would get more control of your PC and more power at the same time. Just some thoughts. If you want my Lindows 4.5 Developer's Edition, just send me a PM through Neowin here, and it is yours.
