MAC G5 hardware question

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone !

So ... I decided to switch in Mac world after about 10 years using PC because first I love the mac gui, and I don't have time to play anymore (to much work). So I thought it wil be good to enjoy it even when I work.

I plan to buy the new MAC G5 Dual 2Ghz

BTW I have some questions :

1 - Does my brand new logitech DiNovo Keyboard/mouse set will work ? it's a bluetooth set but still work in radio wave mode when drivers is not installed on my PC.

2 - I red that any DDR memory work on it, but I would like to be sure I can give it an extra 2X512MB DDR 400 CORSAIR TWINX cas 2

3 - Does My IIAYAMA 19' LCD sreen will work? (I'm waiting for re-feed my wallet to add a 23' cinema display)

4 - In case its not does a Radeon 9700 Pro for PC will work (if I find the drivers).

Sorry for my noob question but Mac hardware it's totally new for me !

Thanks a lot, Janeiro.

1) Logitech currently does not have OS X drivers for the DiNovo. I would assume it will work in 'basic' mode but advanced functionality will most likely be impaired.

2) I do not believe that you will have access to memory timings. Also keep in mind that the G5 requires DDR be installed in pairs.

3) It will work (video should have both DVI and ADC connections)

4) Not unless you flash the card which can be a risky proposition.

1) The mouse should work flawless, even withouth driver, and for the extra buttons you can assign them to expos?, for sure!

2) Do you already own that memory, or do you want to buy them? 'Cos i suggest to go and fetch memory for G5, directly. I found the site of the procucer of the memory Apple use in is computer, and they sell it for a very affordable price, compared to the one that Apple puts on it's Online Store. I'm at work right now, but I will give you the link as soon as I come back home.

3) It will work, no problem.

4) YES! No doubt about that, of course not out of the box, but not even windows does no? Go for Vnc, it's a great apps that read every kind of formats, incluiding WMV e WMA.

1) Like the man said, there are no OS X drivers for it, so you will only get basic usage out of it.

2) as long as the two ram sticks are identical, they will work. If you need more, just get it from Crucial.

4) Your ATI card WILL NOT work in a Macintosh. There is also no way to flash it to make it work either.

As far as divx, etc...just download VLC...no need to install any codecs.

Thank you very much, I'm impress about your kindness.

My RAM is a CORSAIR double set (2X512) TWIN X PC 3200 (DDR400) CAS 2, so they are certified to exactly the same.

I have some more questions. Actually I manage my file server (fake one cause the os is juste Windows xp, but still running without display and keyboad) with windows remote desktop (RealVNC like).

1 - Is there a solution similar to VNC in MAC OS X ? ... that I can manage my Windows file server from my G5? I mean, have the VNC client running on MAC OS X, and the VNC server running on windows xp.

2 - Does file sharing with MAC/Windows computeurs is difficult? ... I used to have small hard drive on my computer (just for applications) and every documents on my Files server.

Thanks in advance. Janeiro

You're welcome!

1) There is a VNC version for Mac Os X, so you shouldn't have any problem at all to connect to a VNC Server on a windows machine. I also use VNC at work, and i have a windows machine there, I can try to see if i can connect from home... and let you know, but i'm almost sure i've heard people using it with no problems! :)

2) Not at all, it's a simple network share, you can try it by yourself very easily once you've recived your G5. (Damn I envy you! ;) )
