Installing Fedora?

Recommended Posts

Ok I admit I'm a newb to linux, I've tried a few different distros and this time I'm hoping to stick with it, not because I don't like windows (I LOVE windows.) but because I'm interested in linux. So I downloaded Fedora and when I go to install it, it'll get right to the point where the actual installer (Anaconda I think its called.) starts and then I'll just get a white screen and my computer will hang. If I try installing it on a virtual PC it will work fine but I hate virtual PCs. A friend of mine says it might have something to do with the fact that I have a Radeon 9800 Pro but he doesn't know what I can do about it. So I decided to ask here. So yeah...What do I do?

LiNUX has added solid support for ATI cards in kernel 2.6. ATI users have to start getting on ATI's back about supporting LiNUX.

Do you have your TFT connected to that 9800Pro via DVI?

If you do switch to the DSUB...

If your feeling confident try a TEXT install.

if its your first time, dont do a text install. i almost peed myself trying to partion my hdd in text mode. i ended up exiting the installer right there and dint try again, tho i wanted to.

Ok I did a text install and atleast it installed. Then after the reboot at the screen where it lists all these things and then says [OK] after each one, its gets to something along the lines of "Start system for the first time." I know I should have wrote down exactly what it says but I'm sure someone'll know I'm talking about. Well at that point it hangs so I had to restart it. Now its at "Initializing Firewire Controller" and I can see the little thing blinking in the corner but its been sitting there for atleast 10 minutes now. Any ideas?

I got the same (it think) white screen. This was because I hooked up my TV-Out to my TV (which always works fine in Windows). So I unplugged the cable from the TV-Out, rebooted and all was fine.

Maybe that helps (and maybe not :p)

Do you use Fedora V1.91, so Test 2 ? I found that it is extremly unreliable, compared to Test 1, which works fine for me at work. So I'd suggest to try FC 1 or to wait for the final of FC. With a little tweaking you get it eventually run, but I am still in the process of this by myself. I had to deactivate kudzu (hardware probing), then I could run through to the desktop. You can do that during boot by pressing "i" for interactive and then say no when he asks for start kudzu.

Then you are in and do the rest of tweaking. I needed to disable this "secure linux" (selinux) as otherwise the internet did not work. (/etc/sysconfig/selinux : SELINUX=disabled)

Perhaps this works :ninja:

If not, Mandrake and Suse might be better suited, as they have the end user as the target and Fedora currently only developers and testers I think.

good luck

I like Fedora (test 1) most, so I used it now for a longer time, test 2 is currently a disappointment
