Tim Dorr Veteran Posted April 8, 2004 Veteran Share Posted April 8, 2004 Well, it only took 3 years, but OS X finally has it's first non-harmful trojan "virus": The Mac News Network reports that Intego has anounced an update to their anti-virus app for snagging the first Mac OS X Trojan horse, MP3Concept (MP3Virus.Gen), which exploits a weakness in Mac OS X where applications can appear to be other types of files." http://www.macnn.com/ http://www.intego.com/home.asp http://apple.slashdot.org/apple/04/04/08/1...tid=126&tid=172 It appears that it's totally benign and more of a proof-of-concept virus. I'm sure Apple will release a patch to protect against *actual* viruses of this nature in the future, but for now AV still isn't neccessary on a Mac :)

Samoa
Hello, of course there are viruses on Macs. It was sarcasm. go to dictionary.com for the definition of sarcasm and look at the examples. ;) People should just wake up and make tons of trojans/viruses for MacOSX, so Mac users can stop being so damn smug. :ninja:

IMO, ALL software is meant to be FREE, open-sourced, widely available, and non-malicious. But.. I, uh, have a very Stallman way of looking at things,..... :)

Garry
Oh boy. Talk about a marketing ploy by Intego. I won't go into why this is a stupid thing to call 'a virus' but really, it is. This is akin to renaming a Trojan, on Windows, to filename.jpg.exe or something like this. Plus, to do any real damage, the so called 'virus' would have to ask you for your password. (Who gives that to an MP3 file?!) AND the file would have to be downloaded in .sitx or .dmg format, then unstuffed / mounted and then double clicked!!
