Fonzie
I read on a danish Mac site that there's a virus out for OSX called MP3Virus.Gen. It supposedly makes use of the "feature" or "bug" in OSX that files can be named something they are not. Or something like that. Anyway, www.intego.com released a new VirusBarrier virus definition. I apologize if it has been discussed before. I haven't noticed it.

the evn show
As long as we're ranting and raving: it's a trojan - not a virus. Trojans are programs that "you think" do one thing, but actually do another (ie: sub7) and typically allow another user to have access to your system. Worms are applications that spread themselves from one system to another (ie: melissa) typically through email but can also propagate by RPC (ie: blaster) or network shares. Viruses are programs that spread themselves automatically from one file to another, but cannot traverse a network without user interaction like manually copying an infected file to CD and taking that CD to another system and running the file (ie: chernobyl) Yes those were extremely simplified descriptions but this isn't a computer science course so I'm not going to fret the small things. I'm a little sad that the computer community has largely allowed the terms to fall into disuse but I guess when you have the ..."mess"... that the win32 world is in - it's easier just to call everything a virus and leave it at that. Personally, I find viruses (typically) to be interesting because the techniques required to hide your changes in the files sytem, in files, and copy the virulent code about while keeping everything small enough to be unnoticed is pretty cool. Worms are pretty cool because they operate much closer to 'live' organisms than other forms of malware - and the code required to make it spread from system to system is pretty neat. Trojan horses are not really interesting to me because the only "neat" thing about them is that they (typically) have to trick a user into running them. There's no technical genius required for that: just promise a user that there's some XXX pictures in it for them if they run the application.
