High resolution on Laptop under Linux

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm just wondering if this would damage my LCDs on my laptop, cuz sometimes when I perform some

manipulations on the screen (e.g. simply just change the destop background), I can hear some sorts

of sounds from the LCDs (sounds like refreshing the screen "hzzzzz...", though just last for 1-2 secs)

My current resolution is 1280x1024@60Hz with video card of 64MB Radeon Mobility 9000, and the

specification of my laptop says the maximum could be as high as 1600x1280. Besides, under windows,

this machine is configured as 1400x1024, things like that, and no such problem at all.

Is this a serious problem to my LCDs? Im a little bit scared by some screen damage stories post on other

forums. Thank you.

Is 1600x1280 the native resolution of the LCD? You should run it at that.

You can 'virtualize' your desktop larger, if you wish, to run a larger desktop on a smaller LCD. The screen will 'scroll' around as a window of a larger desktop. I find this EXTREMELY annoying, and I don't do it.

But, your laptop may use 'emulation' of higher resolutions than native. This basically blends adjacent pixels together and squishes them onto one pixel of the LCD.

Running it at a lower res (like 800x600) isn't a problem. You just get chunky pixels.
