Get a new (and fast) Mac for $799

Apple just updated the eMac today to 1.25Ghz w/ DDR Ram, an ATi 9200, USB 2.0, and a Combo drive for just $799. If I wasn't in the market for a PowerMac G5. I would be buying one of these, because they're cheap and fast little machines. Maybe some people can finally stop complaining about Macs being so expensive ;)

256MBs of RAM, a 40GB hard drive, and a 32MB Radeon 9200? Sounds like you'd need to spend a little more than $799 to make it useful.

256MB of RAM is the bare minimum I consider to be a "proper" amount with OSX. 128MB to 256MB is a MUCH bigger jump than 256MB to 512MB in perceived speed. The video card is also more than enough because you're not going to be playing as many games on this machine. The hard drive you can argue on, but it all depends on what you do with your machine. But like cmove said, it's a great student machine.

Third-party ram is still cheap. You can buy two 512MB sticks after the fact.

YES! YES! YES! I've been waiting for this for months on end!

Thanks Timdorr!

Wonder how long it'll be until they come to the UK?

Yipee! Excellent.

Not only is it 250mhz faster than before, it also has twice the L2 cache (this will make a huge difference in some applications) _and_ DDR ram! These things should fly!

Also, for us UKers here, the price of the combo is ?549 inc VAT and del, and superdrive for ?699.

This is a huge bargin and you are gonna get a much better machine, for ?100 less than before.

The Apple Store UK hasn't updated yet, so don't panic when it shows you the old models. Hopefully they should have them up for sale soon.

Yeah just noticed that. I wonder how much it'll be with the student discount?

I wish the G4 line would just die! As soon as they introduce G5s to all their machines (bar the iBook of course) the better, people aren't going to be fooled into buying this archaic CPU.

But people like me who want a budget Mac just to do a few tasks like iTunes/iPod, iDVD, etc......the G4 is more than capable.

You're a dying breed, there aren't many people that would shell out $799 (+extra money for software) on a product that uses yesturdays technology just for the privilage of running MacOSX, iTunes, iLife and Office:mac.

I'm not a troll, I like the PPC platform, I just think that the G4 is well past its sell by date. Apple has been given a smooking gun by IBM with the G5, and it's taking a bloody long time to get it over to the other products other than the PMG5. And don't give me the heat crap, the G5 is as cool as a cucumber at 90nm and faster too, I just think they're being lazy.

Then again I don't want to shell out a minimum of $1800 on a new G5, WITHOUT the monitor.

thats totally what I was thinking.

Well, I personally don't think so. The G4 1.25ghz is probably as fast as a Pentium 4 1.6ghz. I know people who do just fine on P41.6ghz, and while yes you have to pay a premium for Apple stuff, it's worth it just for OSX.

1.6? I'd say at least a P4 2.0Ghz (taking into account the L2 cache, DDR ram and IPC ratios of a G4 to a P4). And if you're coming from a PC, there is no real comparison. It will just seem "fast" by itself.

You're not buying just a CPU you know, there are other components here. And with that said the eMac looks even worse, with the whopping 256MB of DDR (which I don't think the G4 can totally utilise anyway with that crippled FSB), a graphics card which is just good enough for Quartz extreme so you can render MacOSX fully but don't even try to play a game and to top it all of a minuscule hard drive.

Well, iTunes really isn't a selling point anymore now that you can get it on the PC. However, there are a ton of Mac apps that don't exist in the PC world, that I would beg to differ on (BBEdit comes to mind). Also, we're talking about an all-on-one package here. Unpack. Plug in. Turn on. From hardware to software, the whole package is designed to work together. Plus, the form factor and sizing play a big role, because an eMac is the size of a monitor and doesn't require the space of an extra case sitting around.

Edit:

The FSB is 333 now, so it can utilize it. Especially for the types of apps that it will be used for primarily. As for games, they demo the games on eMacs (and old style iMac) at the Apple store. The older version eMac, at that. We're not talking about running Doom3 here, but something more simple like UT2K4 or MOHAA. And 40GB is more than enough for the target market their going after. Not everyone has a 50GB porn collection

256MB is all you need for basic apps like iTunes. It's not a resource hog like Windows.

A Radeon 9200 is all you need for iTunes, iMovie, etc.....I do not intend to play a single game on it.

You can upgrade the hard drive.

timdorr I can't believe you'de every be happy with that eMac, despite what you say, Apple's throwing you a bone here a small insignificant speed bump to please the Mac zealots. Why settle with a bone when you could have the whole hog? eMac G5 1.5GHz, a nice 256MBDRR (512MB on the better models) and a 64MB card and 60~80GB HDD. That would be a respectable system for the price, and that's what I'de expect from Apple if they were serious about selling this product to me and not the Mac fan boys.

I'd be happy with a PowerMac G5 because that's what I'm in the market and have the money ready for. However, if I was to be getting an eMac which is about 2/3 the speed of a 1.6Ghz G5 (taking into account bus speeds and processor benchmarks between the G4 and G5) for less than half the cost in a self-ccontained all-in-one unit, I'd be pretty happy.

Yes, I can see there would be problem with the PMG5 1.6GHz, Apple would need to update its entire line of PowerMacs. Top end Dual 3GHz, middle dual 2.6Ghz end 2.2GHz (single).
